Re: Who would you look at ?
I don't think anyone disagrees with any of this but, any bird dog needs to have the same tools . When a pup is born, weather of a grouse woods line or prairie lines, the pup does not know what a bird is or how it needs to be handled, hence a bird dog with all of what you describe will hunt any uplan...

The contacts posted are good prospects. The best way to get the dog you want is to KNOW that the patents ACTUALLY hunt the game you will be hunting - don't take someon's word for it. Once "pure breeding" was established the genes would most likely be eliminated from the pool.
I doubt today we would see these tri-colored genes.

No need to confirm that pointers have a nose and a dam good one at that!
Maybe we will start to see videos of pointers actually do such work. Instead of the usual tossed dummy in water and air scenting of birds.

UT has shots at the water.
While the water blind can be a challenge, not too difficult to teach a dog to take a line. This is basic retriever foundation.

Eliciting prey drive is easy - fleeing prey - maintaining the drive is what separates the good from the not so good. How much bird finding ability and bird handling ability is being judged in 1 hour stakes (or any Ft stake)
Most dogs under 4 years old have enough stamina and endurance to make it through a balls to the walls hour

The arkwright Pointer was bred in to raise the head (and eye color which did not work). The DK had an exceptional nose(and still does),all tracking breeds do, due to the hound influence. It's all about the genes.
the 50lb NAVHDA bitch bred to a 60lb horseback wild bird dog indicates nothing to me.
if breeders breed nose, drive and cooperation the rest is in the hands of the person training the dog.
A dog has to want to seek game.

It all depends on what you want and need. The DK has been bred with an emphasis on versatility. Many hunters don't want it nor need it. I have yet to see one DK that didn't point. The high head, high tail point is not typical of a DK. DKs do point with intensity, with a well bred DK every aspect of t...
