Re: OFA certification when buying a pup?

I have mixed feelings about this issue also. First, you should know that I have my dogs OFA'd if they are going to be bred. However, OFA is no guarantee that pups will be HD free and it is not a particularly effective way to remove the trait (dysplasia) from a line or breed. It is no better than exp...

Shorthaired dogs shed more, long haired dogs shed less. But the hairs on the long haired dogs are longer (duh) so it comes out the same. Anyone who tells you that a breed of dogs doesn't shed, is marketing.

I second the motion on Delmar Smith. Since his book was written there have been many improvements to his way of doing things. The Smith brothers themselves have some new methods. But so far, nothing out there beats his philosophy on how to raise a bird dog.

Yes, sure you can make it a foot handled trial. Nothing in the Rules says you can't. You will want to make sure the advertisement says "No horseback handling permitted."

The AF Derby age was modeled after the system used for race horses.

Pointer derbies are a different deal. The same "magic" that has pups being born on Jan. 1, also has them born to a dam whose litter is whelped in 2012, so they can run in 2014 as broke derbies.
