Re: GSP less active, change food?
Hard to know why that would be, unless they believe the dog absorbs the nutrients less well when fed once a day. But I'll bet you'll find the same vets would tell you that feeding twice a day will reduce the possibility of gastric torsion (bloat). I don't think so. The majority of trainers and fiel...

Re: GSP less active, change food?
I think you need to adjust the amount your feeding to keep his weight where you want it. Some dogs, like yours, appear to be hungry 24/7. Don't give in, he won't starve. Not sure how many times a day you are feeding but if more than once I would try feeding him just once a day in the evening. I've b...

I realize some dogs (GSPs, etc.) do not need a vest. But I also have a Brittany with a fine light coat. A vest sure helps protect the underside. It also aids in visibility. I'm with the others on this thread and feed once a day around supper time. I was told by trainers and field trialers long ago that feeding once a day, later in the day, gives the dog a chance to digest their food before running in the morning. They claimed a dog runs harder and cooler with an empty ...

Glad I was able to steer you to that trial and so happy you had a great time. In the future you can check the NSTRA web site for trials in both the Big Sky Region and the Mid-North Region. That's probably the last trial for this year in either region, they will start up again in the spring.

That's a very common occurrence. I've seen that throughout my 60+ years of pheasant hunting. Not sure why and have never figured out anything that can be done about it other than trying to work into the wind. It's just one of those things of nature I guess.

Re: Is It Time to Give Up?
Sometimes that point is 200-300 yards out and since you can't run in NSTRA it can take some time to get to the dog. That's when she is likely to scoop the bird. Have you worked on that in training by making her wait? Lots of times in training it's dog points and handler gets right on the flush. But...

" It's too late this year with hunting season approaching". That comment really interests me and I think it shows, or may show, a big problem many have. Sometimes giving a pup too much free run in the house makes it more difficult to potty train. I would crate him in the house for a few hours at a time. First, to answer your original question. I do not believe booting your dog will cause him to over heat. I've run my dogs for many years with my bicycle on bike paths, streets and gravel roads. The only time it has affected the dog's feet was when running on concrete. That little bit of rougher surfa...

Make sure you get a true "field bred" Springer. Over the years the field and bench Springers have almost evolved into separate breeds. Sorry I can't help you with any breeders in your area but I could give you a couple of excellent references in Minnesota. PM me if you would like that info.

I think you are expecting a whole lot more than you should out of a 9 week old pup. At this age the only training you should be doing is teaching the dog her name and basic commands like Come, Heel, etc. You should not even be thinking about "off leash" work. She's a very young pup. Play with her an...

It would appear that your "force fetch" was not complete. You need to go back and repeat it or probably have a pro do it for you. Unless you are experienced at doing force fetch I've found it difficult to do yourself no matter how many books you read or videos you watch. Good luck.
