I would say 90% of my bird hunting is done on chukar. The other 10% is a mix of ducks/grouse/quail.

I believe that a dog can have all the natural ability in the world and it can be overshadowed by prey drive or temperment. Just because a dog is natural doesn't mean they will end up being a better bird dog in the end, it just depends on what you are looking for.

If it was me I would coop him up for a few days, maybe even a week or two. His reward really should be getting to hunt birds, I don't think you need to shoot any for him to keep him excited about them. You are lucky to have wild birds in your back yard.

Aparently the show dog people do not have dogs that are capable of contending as DC. Have the show dog people just given up for hunt test and agility acredidation? Why has DC gone away. I haven't heard of a DC in years. Again... I have to say that AKC/GSPCA standards have gone down hill drastically...

If people truely want to work under very strict testing parameters, breedwardens, and standards, there is always the option of joining the NADKC. There are some really good dogs and nice people in that club. I still have not seen a single person referance a flaw of the AKC standard (other than color).

The term "Form Follows Function" is misleading IMO. Ignoring a dogs conformation would imply that you do not care how well a dog moves in the hunting field, which to me is ignoring function.
