mine have a problem with this, don't know if it will go away with age or not since these are my first dogs. i can't punish them because they have only done what i have asked. my best advice is to hunt them alone or find a hunting partner who doesn't hack at their dog.

i would use game birds. dogs that have been pointing game birds for some time often show disinterest in pigeons. if your dog doesn't point the pigeons it might be just because it is a pigeon not because it doesn't want to point game birds. eliminate that step and go straight to game birds. my dogs w...

have one male with a nice looking ped (http://www.perfectpedigrees.com/4genview.php?id=1654) and another female who doesn't have a single title in her 4gen ped. they are both good dogs but the female has been the nicer hunting dog of the two so far.

You do realize the distances you are talking is near a quarter of a mile ti almost 3/4 of a mile. Have no idea what kind of cover you are talking but it is darn hard to see a 20 to 25 inch dog in 20 inch cover when they are a 100 yards away. why would you want to walk 500yds when you could walk 200yds. Because there is a bird there?? if you read my post it says that all ranges have their place, if i am hitting a high concentrated field then a dog pointing 500yds out wouldn't be optimal, i think you would get more points with less effor...

your best bet is to get an astro or some type of tracking device. i think the astro would give you some idea of what your dog is up to and how far away your dog actually is, i think dogs are usually closer around than you think (on average). hustonmc, i think range is a matter of personal preference...

Even with her running past and turning back still gives plenty of opportunity to run right over a bird. in your situation my older dog would cast out running in the field and work the edge back to me, that would limit the probability of her running up birds and increase her chances of scenting bird...
