Attaching aluminum flashing on the outside walls of my loft has stopped all climbing predators from crawling up to the entrance door. I used to be plagued by possums, coons and cats. No more since attaching the flashing.

Avoid the cheap Indian or Maylaysian brass snaps that they sell at a lot of farm stores.
A quality bronze snap will far outlast the cheap ones. It will save you time later trying to roundup the renegade that broke off the line or roading rig.

Be sure to use bronze swivel snaps instead of cheaper brass snaps on your chaingangs, stakeouts and checkcords. A bit more expensive but bronze snaps will far outlast the brass ones. Nice to find that my old friend John Lee's hammerless stake is still available. It can hold a horse in most soils. One of the most handy stakes you'll ever use.

I'd like to add that judges should maintain the pace of the stake. At breakaway there is a high level of excitement and the dogs and handlers will normally push the pace. Yes, I would judge them differently. I have in mind what I believe a dog should do in the stake it has been entered. There are written guidelines for amateur shooting dog stakes and championships. There are NO written guidelines for open stakes. Minimum American Field Standards, yes, but a pro or so...

An alternative to staking your horses would be to high-line them. It's required at a number of public horse camping areas. My suggested would be to have a small area based with tamped limestone findings where the dogs are trained to do their duty. the limestone will absorb most odors well. Interesting that two previous winning National Champions were drawn to run against each other.
