Here's a photo of Moxy on the find. The photo doesn't do justice, but she was so cross up in front her legs gave out and she fell on her face. I couldn't quit laughing.

I'd love to chase birds in the old south, but gators get my hackles all up. I can handle snakes as long as they're not those twenty-foot pythons you guys have in Florida and I can handle spiders, coyotes, porcupines, wild cats, etc. But, I can't handle gators.

There are different sorts of aggression. You have dogs that are in the red zone and try to attack everything that moves. That can be caused by a lot of different thing. It sounds like this is just a pecking order situation. By natural instinct, dogs don't want to fight. It's counterintuitive to thei...

I'm in Missouri, so a long way from New York, but I'll be out as often as I can this season. Woodcock season runs the month of November and rifle season opened yesterday. If you get a new dog that's one of the big four (Pointer, E. Setter, Shorthair, Britt), it's a cinch to bring them on to where they are out of sight a few minutes. It's also a cinch to reel them in. All you have to do is overexpose them to birds in a small area when they're young and it can really d...

The last thing in the world you want to do to him right now is hit him with the collar. Ray's a hundred percent right on this one. Whoa has nothing to do with pointing whatsoever. You can teach a Chihuahua to Whoa then put a bird in front of him, but that doesn't mean he's pointing. It means he's standing there with a bird in front of him, but the bird is incidental. If a dog is truly ...

If your dogs are hunting dogs and you don't plan on running any events, don't worry about the pups. Just don't shoot any birds your broke dog moves on. In that respect, if you're looking to do some serious hunting and your goal is to put birds in the bag, I'd bench the pup. If you're okay with letti...

I run a Pointer and a Setter personally, but they have both ran with Vizslas, Shorthairs, Irish, Britts, etc. If you're hesitant because you're afraid they'll conflict each other in the field, don't fret. A lot of it has to do with how they are handled and trained.

Doc, the last thing I would do right now is shoot over the dog. Let him be a puppy and learn he can't catch the birds by bumping and chasing. If you have to restrain him to hold until the flush then killing a bird isn't doing anything besides satisfying your desire to shoot a bird over your dog. If ...
