Re: Quail Recall
I think your set up will work. The birds will cross the road. Once they start recalling, they should come in from a couple of hundred yards with no problem. There is one issue, the birds will be exposed as they cross the road. Hawks and other predators can pick them off with greater ease as they cro...

Re: Do recall pens for quail really work
Yes, it absolutely works. Google 'johnny house', and you should see a lot of designs. I find this works best when you start with young quail, somewhere between 8 and 12 weeks. Leave them in the pen for a week or ten days. Then start letting a few birds out each day for a week or ten days. Then start...

Your situation is not all that unusual. I suspect that a little time will solve it all. I wouldn't push it. I would run the pup a lot and show him a bird once a week or so until the light comes on. The dog may have learned to point the scent of the launcher instead of the bird. Go out and do everything as you normally do, just don't put a bird in the launcher, set an empty launcher in the field. Run the dog past this, there is a good chance he will point it. Just keep going and call to him unt...

This answer is assuming that you don't want to hunt rabbits with the dog. I would do nothing, I would not encourage it, or discourage it. As the dog matures and finds more game birds, he will forget about rabbits and mice and sparrows, etc... The only off game that I would correct him for is deer.

I generally agree with everyone else, but there is another possibility. Your pup may have figured out the game. It depends on what the trainer is going to do. If the trainer is going to run the pup and maybe work on pattern a little in areas with birds and let the pup knock and chase, then it may be a great idea. If the trainer is actually trying to break the dog at this point, then I think it is too early.
