Re: Trial gunner needs advice please

Don't shoot and run - after shooting the bird, wait until the dog runs past you before you move behind the handler. If you move before the dog runs past you then if the dog marked the bird off your gun position you put the dog at a disadvantage, and also your movement causes an unnecessary - and unw...

Yes, the locators work just fine! Someone had goobered some kind of silicone on the solenoid terminals and although it looks awful, there hasn't been any trouble with using them in wet grass. I like the plywood idea though - thanks!

I bought some well used Dogtra launchers this summer. Turns out they were in pretty rough shape, but they worked OK - mostly. So I've been working on cleaning them up and replacing a few parts. NJ has the best pheasant breeding/stocking programs in the Northeast. The birds are strong fliers, and hold well for pointing dogs. The only way you can legally shoot game birds out of season is with a field trial permit issued by the state. Field trial permits are not issued to individuals. All Del Val training clinics are run under a DF&W field trial permit.

Another method I've seen used with quail is to tie a 4-6' piece of surveyor's tape to one of the bird's legs. After the bird lands, you can find it easily and then catch it just by grabbing the tape. Once you have hold of the tape it won't matter if it flushes again.

It's been said before - the cheapest part of owning a bird dog is the price of the dog.

I use birds that home, or if I tether birds I use a 25' cord. LCS has a decent pigeon tether for very little money or you can use parachute cord. I usually tie it to a small bumper.

There is no substitute for wild birds. My shorthair did not steady up on point until she bumped her 3rd grouse, and she's been solid since then.
