Re: Dog not "going with" me
My next pup was more the range I needed. As soon as I got him, 8 weeks, I had him in the field. I kept quiet and when he got out a ways I would change directions and not say a word. He soon figured out he needed to keep an eye on me. He's 4 now and I hunt him and never have to say a word. What a ple...

Re: Dog not "going with" me
I've made your mistake. Bought way more dog than I needed. Way too much field trial blood. She was the most independent pup in the litter. She is an 800 yd dog and was by 6 months, and I needed a 2 or 300 yd dog. Figured out that I was over my head. These people have given you far better suggestions ...

Around here huns run and are hard for dogs to handle. Sounds to me like you have some running and spooky birds. Might be the birds and not the dog.

Dog disappeared off the face of the earth
Got up chukar hunting at first light Saturday. We were getting out our vests and guns, turned around and my sons 8.5 year old gsp was already heading down the finger. We called but he was out of hearing range. He looked over and said the GPS collar wasn't turned on. We headed down the finger, fig...

Re: My little man
Start him young understanding that you are a team. The species you hunt will teach him productive range. Many like to let a dog run (wild) for a year or so. That's when you can develop issues that you're going to have to fix later. Because they get a bit older and have developed bad habits, you're ...

So do you think you are going to have a 300 yd dog or 600 to 1000 yd dog. I've got one of each and prefer the 300 yd dog. The 800 or 1000yd dog and I don't see eye to eye always. Much easier to buy the range of pup that works naturally at the range you are comfortable with.

Re: Picky dog...food suggestions
Try chicken soup for the soul. Strange name but my picky eater eats it without top dressing it. Pretty good food also, my dogs do well on it. And don't over feed. And measure amounts and feed twice a day with 60% at night. Give him 15 or 20 minutes then pick it up. They have to learn to eat when giv...

Re: Worried I picked the wallflower pup
I would absolutely stay away from the dominate pup. Depending on the breeding they can turn into a handful for a novice trainer. I ended up with the last pick on a high powered litter and she was the dominate female. I've had my hands full with her. Haven't decided if she is the worst or best dog I'...

Re: Dog points, but won't point pheasants
A smart old wild pheasant is a handfull for an inexperienced dog. Your dog would probably love to point them and I'll bet he knows it's a game bird. May take some time for him to learn how to handle them. No dog can handle every pheasant correctly because some pheasants just refuse to be handled. Al...

That's great news! I thought that breeding might produce some nice dogs. Nice find. Enjoy the ride. A month then and another month later on would be a great investment. Is he taking more after the sire or dam? Don't think he will get to big. Think you will end up with a nice size athletic dog. Good ...

The Internet has its limits – or perhaps my typing skills have their limits. I'm sure others will fill in for my unwillingness to address the subject of why your dog should be steady to wing. Steady to shot is a different story for many. But I'd suggest you read a few basic books on the subject of ...

Greg, people mourn in various ways. Some choose to honor the person during their lifetime, when it counts, for example. Others may not feel the need to parade their feelings in front of judgmental types as a sort of test of their loyalty, as another example. Not talking, test of their loyalty. Just...

Glad I'm a shorthair guy. There are lots of nice litters to choose from. I don't have to buy a pup without full registration. Breeders can choose to provide only limited registration papers until they are satisfied. And I can choose to find another litter. Pretty simple.

The older I get the more I appreciate a pointing breed. They cover a lot of ground. When they go on point I catch up. It just takes longer to catch up now. All the pointing breeds have lines that are easily 1000 yd dogs, Definitely not for the faint of heart. They also have lines that are 100 yd dog...

One other thing. If you hunt in extreme weather you need to watch for hypothermia. Especially if it is wet. Don't get too far from some source of heat. That you can get to quick if the dog starts shivering …….Cj For sure. Was hunting in a pouring rain on a day that was sitting at 32. One of my dogs...

Head looks like gsp. Heads vary a bit with gsp's. Typical patch at the base of the tail also. A lot of the white gsp's have a really soft fine coat. Quite a bit of leg and neck. Looks young with not much chest yet. Most happy shorthairs don't spend much time with their tail hanging like that though....

If you want some horsepower for the Prairies you can look at Field trial champions. The average hunter that doesn't tra...

Hunt tests JH- Junior hunter isn't much. Don't think they have to be steady to wing shot fall. SH - senior hunter. Has to be steady, handle well, retrieve to hand. Harder to get MH - Master Hunter. Re: Chukar
I've gotten use to seeing them fly across a canyon and over the next ridge. Or so far down a canyon that I know I'll never see them again. Jumping 100 yards ahead of the dog. But being where they live makes my spirit right.
