Re: hunting ...near or far ....what about standing still??
I whistle trained for change direction come about. 1 tweet. Recall multiple tweets. I then overlayed the tone on the alpha. The alpha tone works great she can always hear it and it's quiet out in the field. I let her hunt the way she wants as long as she is in sight. When she goes over the ridge I r...

Re: can a dog run "big" ....just for fun? ....hurt hunting?
This last summer I was walking in the sagebrush with the wife. Let my 1 year old run free. My alpha switches from yds to miles at 900 yds. I think it's genetic with her. At 1 year old they don't know the difference of fun walks and hunting. When I hit hunting season I found I wasn't comfortable with...

I use cardboard apple boxes with the vents. I cut a 6 inch hole in the lid on the end near the top. I then lift the lid enough so the hole shows to put them in and take them out. It's hard for them to escape out the hole with your arm reaching through. I've tried it by cracking the lid open but have...

Had the pup up in some rough steep rocky country. Got up into our first covey of chukar. A long climb at that point. Started to see blood on the ground. She looked normal moving uphill but didn't look right moving downhill. Got her over to take a look. Both front pads were missing a layer on the par...

I got out and hit 1 spot Friday 3.5 hours one hunt. She was at 12 mph hunting huns but we dropped into a canyon to hunt quail on our way back down. Her average dropped from 12 to 8 mph average for the morning. The time was about split. That must have her down at 4 mph down in the brush. The reason I...

Don't have much experience but it looks like you might get 10 young per pair. Someone with more experience could give you real numbers. How many young are you needing a year. With 30 birds your going to have a population explosions.

When out hunting I look at it to see where my out of sight dog is. Or use the tone instead of a whistle. I like quiet peaceful away from people time, out with the dog. But when I get home I crack a beer and check out the different hunts and dog info.

Just wondering what average ground speed the different breeds are showing on the gps. I hunt 1/2 to 1 1/2 hours then move to a new spot. So the dog gets some rest between hunts.
german shorthair. First hunt 12.5 mph later in the day 10 to 10.5 mph in open country

Close, med, big, part 2
A definition of close, med, big, seemed hard to nail down. Seems people want to include cover and terrain. Why is that? Is it because people want to see their dog a certain percentage of the time or the amount of time it will take to get to the dog. A combination of things. What percentage of the ti...

My dog spends a lot of time out at 150 to 250 out in the sagebrush. 1 1/2 year old shorthair. At 200 to 300 yds she is generally out of sight with the gullies, hills, sagebrush.
