Re: getting pigeon's to lay egg's
I am in central Mn. My pigeons are just starting to lay. Cold does not seem to bother them. I've had babys hatch at -20 and do fine. I think yours may be to young. Haven't had much luck with quail and pigeons together . The quail start dying in a couple weeks. I used to leave lights on 24-7 but made...

Re: AKC JH test- When to arrive?
Remember if you are late they don't have to let you run and most clubs won't. So you lose your entry, time and other costs. It is a good learning experience for both you and the dog to hang out ,watch and learn

Re: In heat?
Thanks While I in no way consider myself an expert on dog breeding or anything else, I have been involved in it for many years and have seen many Bitches in estrus. One thing they all had in common was vaginal bleeding and swollen vulva. It may be possible that they will breed without that, however ...

Re: In heat?
Sorry, some people need to lighten up a little bit. Bleeding and swollen vulva are all the signs you need. Some bitches will go to great lengths to find a dog, so don't give her a chance, or your next sign may be what my post said. Absolutly don't let out without being on a leash

Re: When is it TOO cold?
A dog normally sleeps 18 hours in 24 so if they have a warm place to sleep they are probably good to go. My question is do these dogs get any training, excersize or any other attention when it is 0 or below. that would take about 5 months out of our schedule if it all had to be outside. WE have plen...

Re: Dog Box
I have a insulated all aluminum Patriot dog box I bought about 8 years ago. I sprayed the interior with bed liner so it doesn't turn the white dogs black. I would put the doors higher on the box my taller dogs bump and it would keep bedding in better. also don't like the flip latches the the dogs le...

Re: Pigeon launching help
Plant a locked wing pigeon near the launcher so she smells it. keep her on a check cord stop her when she makes game If she don't point on her own. launch the launcher pigeon when she moves or gets to close. Do not let her catch the locked wing bird let her chase the launched bird. J

If the dog sits on point it is usually from to much pressure. Step her forward back off a little til her confidence grows and it will likely go away.

Re: Dog food recomendations
my dogs have never kept weight on when fed 2 cups a day of many different performance brands.
when hunting I have always had to go at least 4 cups. sometimes more.
Don't go by what the bags says. Go by what the dog says.

We maintain our kennel temp at 63 degrees. What we spend on electricity we save on food and vet bills, I hate to see humped up shivering shorthairs

Re: Dual Champion
The Brittany, being the smallest of the pointing breeds, can get places a 70 lb GSP or Weim can't. Having a more dense coat means a Brittany can get deeper in briars without bleeding out....like the shorted coated dogs do. Having a tail docked, not to exceed 3 inches (per the standard), those briar...

Re: Akc Hunting tests
I'm 54 years old and have been hunting, well, pheasant hunting with my dad and being around hunting dogs long before I could carry a gun, and for decades after. So the question is - is a dog made to ---- Win field championships? Earn hunt test titles? Look good in the show ring? Be a personal hunti...

If you are happy and confident with the breeder let him pick. or pick from pictures .It is a waste of time and gas at five weeks. We pick for most of or buyers
WE pick for most of our buyersand we have many puppies we buy picked by the breeder and with pictures. J

Howie: That is pretty much exactly what I said. If you need eights and you know the judge won't score that high you are wasting you're time and money. I was not whining I was pointing out why there is inconsistency and that the higher scoring dog might not be superior. It is just a difference of opi...

Re: Akc Hunting tests
I'm having trouble agreeing with much of what you are saying about the judging and the scores given. I think you may be missing my my point. This is not a agree or disagree situation. This is the judging and scores given and I thought I was very clear to point out that it is not right or wrong. Jud...

Re: Akc Hunting tests
I believe requiring a certain average to obtain a more prestigous title will hurt the AKC Test more than it would help. I recall from my days of running hunt test with retrievers that there was always talk of certain handlers would not run their dogs under a certain judge. The handler, usually a pr...

Re: Akc Hunting tests
I could agree that the dog has to meet the confirmation standard to compete in the breed clubs breed championship though, if that is what they want to promote. I would caution you to examine that thought in greater detail. If you look at the people that make up the membership of the AKC dog clubs, ...

Re: Akc Hunting tests
Hunt test might have more meaning if the AKC set higher standards for the judges instead of have judges that will pass every dog. There are a lot of judges that don't seem to know what the standards are. We always have people who say the judges pass too many dogs. However the numbers on the AKC eve...

Re: Akc Hunting tests
Not worth the time. Go run walking trials or test in a different venue..... Right on. Just about the AKC getting more $$$ The clubs running the tests will also get more dollars and most can use that. I don't about walking field trials. I already Drink, swear, like bird dogs, hunt tests and wild wome...

I always want more birds. Most bird dogs work better the more birds they find. Show the judge how good the dog is. Confidence counts the dog knows it's a game.

Re: Akc Hunting tests
Raising the bar from average of 7's to 8's , 1 point. Big deal!!!! If a dog average 7's on there passes through out MH makes me think two things. 1. H>S> trainer, handler 2. not much of a dog. IMO AKC should leave well enough alone. Don't they bring in enough revenue off the mutts they now choose t...

Re: Akc Hunting tests
The hunt test sire and dam of the year go to the people who breed their dogs the most and get people to junior the puppies. this will really make that title meaningless. It is passes not titles that count.
