Re: Chuker boots?
I bought a pair of Irish setter Havoc in December. They fit really well, are comfy, and light. How well they will hold up I don't know yet. Have hunted in them about 15 times and no problems so next year will tell.

Re: How to control a dogs range??
A couple of questions. If the dog was with a trainer for 60 days and won't stand birds reliably and won't come very well when called, what did he learn while there, or what did the training consist of. It sounds like you have a great prospect that a grouse hunter would kill for. I would get him to c...

Re: Pointing in yard
I let pups point anything they like and praise them for it. They seem to like butterflys and grasshoppers a lot. Dress warmer and let him have fun he will figure out the difference between the birds you want soon enough.

Most of Wehle's really good dogs were out crosses and the same holds true today. Some do nick well with other strains. I would stay away from Nitro Kennels. It will boil down to what you plan to do with your dogs.

Re: Coyotes and Dogs
I have read that coyotes in the northeast have shown wolf dna and that promotes their size, ie 60 plus pounds. I lived in calif in my younger years and never heard of one close to that size while living there. I have trapped and hunted in the pacific northwest for 40 years and have not seen one over...

Re: Rescue opportunity Idaho
OK, I have done a little checking. The man involved has had his kennel license renewed every year for at least 25 years. The kennel has been inspected two of the last five years and passed. The kennel was deemed not modern but was adequate. While some dogs were thin they were healthy and the kennel ...

Re: Rescue opportunity Idaho
First of all don't believe every thing you read. While some of the dogs were thin they were not starving. I have seen the dogs and can tell you they were checked by an independent vet and they checked out ok. The man in question will not have dogs put down or killed just because they are old or a li...

Re: English pointer not holding point.
I would not shock this dog around birds. If you could run him on wild birds, no matter how he handles them, then start over from step one, that would be a help to you and the dog. If you are new to training and are using someones training guide stick to it to the letter, no shortcuts. Oh yeah, do no...

I use carded birds and let them fly and air wash a little till they land. This way there are no man tracks for the pup to follow. I use a launcher mainly for backing drills.

You might consider buying your own birds and planting them for your dog. It should'nt be to hard to find a place to shoot. It would be cheaper and you could do it at your own covenience.

There should be some doubt about that little long haired pup being part of that slick haired litter. As far as tri color, I have seen a few and If those dogs have any setter in them it would have been 100 years ago if at all.

Idaho upland slam I guess
It has been below zero where I have been hunting this week with about six inches of snow. Today the dogs stood two covies of chukar, one covey of huns and one covey of quail. I got two of everything including two sore knees. What that covey of quail were doing up there is beyond me but the dogs love...

Re: keg creek cooper breed to hanshaws out on bail
I finally got a straight answer to my question on all this e stuff. The e gene does not appear to be a mutant gene. It simplly shows that the dog carrying it has an orange or orange and white dog in its background, very likly a pointer, though there are other possibilities. I can see where people mi...

I love hunting with a good dog, I don't care what breed it is. I have had pointers for as long as I can remember and for the type hunting I do they are what I like. All that I have owned were very game, the two that were not got culled. I know from reading some of these posts there are individuals t...

Re: Range
I guess it depends on what you are hunting. I hunt mostly chukar and a big running dog is a plus. I do expect my dogs to stand till I get there and stand till I flush the birds. If you like closer working dogs that is what you should have. If birds are really in large numbers you would'nt even need ...

There are some on here that don't want to address the question. Maybe they don't know and just want to add their two cents, that or they just like a pi$$ing contest. Pretty amusing either way.

Re: What is an AA pointer?
One reason for unproductives is because ames type dogs are trained to stop at first scent, if no birds are flushed the dog is ask to relocate. If a dog moves without being signaled to do so you might as well pick him up. Sometimes pen raised birds just wander off and other odd stuff happens. I have ...

Are'nt there a lot of gsps and britts that have a lot of english pointer crossed into them? Same goes for setters. One would'nt think they got their big run and intensity by magic. I'm not knocking anyone or their dogs, I have heard this on more than one occasion and I'm just asking.

Re: Could a German shorthaired pointer make it to Ames?
The short reply would be no. This is one of those never say never deals. If you have ever been to ames or have a chance to, it is a worthwhile trip. You will see a grueling test of grit, spirit and bird finding ability. I don't know of any purebred dog but a pointer or a very few setters that have w...

Re: Bumping Birds
You might want to check cord him on some carded pigeons or birds in a launcher. Make sure he knows he is to stop when he smells birds. It just sounds like he needs a little training before actually hunting released birds. Good luck with your pup and both of you have fun.
