Benelli M1 90 20 gauge, for just about everything at the age of 66, which is me. Got all the other but that is my favorite. I don't think I have ever missed a quail with it.

A good nose is just that, "A GOOD NOSE", it is conditional and cerecumstanial. Not seen one with a 100 yd nose but seen a lot of reqally good noses used in tough circumstances

Go to the American Field webpage and they have a list of events by date on their site. Not many fun type events in AKC unless your dog is dead brok to wing and shot. Very few setter clubs. Ky, TN and Indiana and Ohio have lots of A F walking trials

A word to the wise, kitchen table drilling on guns of any type are a major "Bad" "Terrible" idea. Either buy a new blank gun or don't drill the old one, steel is made to withstand certain pressures in a cylinder. Johnny houses concentrate on teaching the birds to fly up, not a distance thing. Makes it easier to keep them as the bottom and sides are hard with wire at the top below the roop, they fly up to see out.

The best 2 that I ever saw, Judged, braced with were Tulli's Scarback and Tarkus. Both of these dogs had all and more that a person could ever want in a bird dog. IMHO the most common error is not trusting to find the dog to the front, if he is not there ur not making any money to begin with.

I would say at the leasgt that your girl has an exceptional nose. In the situations you described she shows it. I am still amazed at some of the thingsI have seen a dog complete with their nose to lead them. That is what building a better bird dog is all about. Congratulations on her nose. Pepper

I have an M1-90 in the 24" gun and it is the best hunting gun I have ever shot; ducks, upland, whatever, it is quick and I have had it for about 15 years. Would not want to sell it.
