Re: 17 week old PP lack of point
What is more important than whether the pup is showing any pointing instincts at this age is how is pups prey drive? Does it clear the yard of song birds and squirrels? If it does the pointing will come with time and some training.

Re: Getting two new dogs can't decide what breeds
My vote would be for the GWP first and ECS second. GWP's are truly all around dogs in my experience. They have good noses, train easily, are good family dogs and work well in the water. ECS are pocket rockets that have unbelievable enthusiasm, and are good field and water dogs. They however would be...

I would get her used staying in a kennel in the house right away. Leave her in another room. Start out with 5 min stints before checking on her. Extend the time. Then leave her in the kennel while you go out of the house for an hour. Come back and check on her. She'll eventually get the idea that yo...

Re: Carded quail.....same quick flutter but don't lose the bird
I've used a carding method of a sorts on pigeons with very good results. Instead of a card I use a length of cut garden hose, usually12-18" in length depending how strong a flier the pigeon is. I do it in an area with no power lines or trees. I use a paracord harness on both legs that won't dig into...

Re: English Setter Pup - Aggression or Not?
I see a couple of things here. First this pup has only been away from it's litter mates for only a month and the Chihuahua is a surrogate. Puppies tend to vie for dominance and unless your older small dog puts it in it's place the puppy will continue. Second the pup is trying set a place in the fami...

Huskerhunt, welcome to the forum. Your choice of a GWP was a good one in my opinion. I own a Lab/GWP cross and an 8 mos old GWP. Both are great dogs. The pup was pointing and retrieving birds this last fall. They are full of energy but learn quick. Have fun and don't push the pup too hard.

One of the guys I hunt with told me that he has heard that taking a pup under 1yo old out in the field more than a couple of times a month can lead to knee problems because the growth plates don't develop correctly. Something that has worked for me. Pin the pup on their back with your index finger and middle finger on either side of their neck and your thumb and ring finger on either side of their front legs. Now without choking the puppy see much it resists you. If it just lays there, it will be a very submiss...

They usually hold well until they have been pressured a bunch, so your flushing dog should be fine. The advantag...

The normal body temperature of a dog is 101 to 102.5 degrees F. So until pond water temp exeeds 100+ F it is actually cooling the dog. I agree that the restricted breathing will compromise the ability of the dog to lose body heat but I would think that swimming in 80 degree water would more than mak...
