Re: Reality of training for UT on your own
I did it myself last summer, but had the suppport of 2 groups that I had to drive 2hours for each train day. They were not real active at the actual test prep, but had great advice on handling tips. Had good search water and ducks for training. I would buy a couple extra when I could to bring home, ...

Re: holding point/ranging
If I see all I want in a young dog, I take them off birds about this age and let them mature a bit,,Then when about 12-14 mo old I will start CC them on launchers and get them steady. I think launchers are good to a point, but I use them only enough to teach them steadyness and I move them to quail....

It was a great weekend. My Dolly has overcome some issues and always knocking at the door. So 2 OGD wins were nice, right in time for her breeding to Sam...Judge told me only difference in Dez and Dolly was Dez took 3 steps on a STF. Very close. Dez is such a nice young dog. Congrats to Andy and Peg...

Because Katie was the person first to bring the disease into public view people think it is from show lines. But Katie was breeding heavily into field lines when this occurred...Of course it takes 2 carriers to produce effected dogs.

Interesting...I know thru testing they have had a number of show line dogs test as carriers ad questions have been raised about the program..I was surprised, as I have not heard of and show line dogs being effected. (not saying there are not any). Because of this, immediate panic of placing or not b...

With the recent move to Mississippi and the extreme heat of the south I was too lazy and let my GSP get chubby. Right now he is about 18lbs from his normal hunting weight. Besides daily exercise should I also cut his food back? I feed him Diamond HI-Performance and 4 cups a day.. If you can't get h...

At this age I would not be concerned with holding point longer. If you see the hunting and range you want then I do not like to overdo pigeon launchers..I like to let them find a good flying quail occasionally to keep interest and not overdo the birds...Let the pup grow up some then put them on a CC...

Re: crunchin birds all of a sudden
There "here" command will most likely not work. You will need to have him FF, and I would shoot anymore birds until that is done. The only thing that will help after the FF, and if he still eats the bird is to "help him eat it." You shove it down his throat until he wants to spit it out, and hold i...

Re: crunchin birds all of a sudden
I would put a very good HERE command on him with the ecollar..When he pics up a bird tell him Here, followed by a low nick. Dogs that want to munch birds are not coming when called, so you are reinforcing Here command, and getting your retrieve.
