Best youth shotgun
IMO the best gun for a youth is a single shot 20 gauge. You can find one thats not expensive and the shells will not break you. The worst possible gun is the 410. Ammunition is expensive and the youth will have a very hard time hitting anything and will be at risk to just souring on hunting as a res...

Proper use of E collar
Phermes, Go the the website www.dobbsdog.com and select training library and then pointing dogs. There is a series of 40+ articles on the proper use of the e collar in training. I have used their training program for years and have had great luck with it. They emphasize the "avoidance" theory vs. th...

Zephyr, I also have a young dog with Dennis. Sunny is a 27 month old that will be running in her first broke dog stake. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you and ask that you keep yours crossed for me. Unfortunately I will not be able to make the trial. If you do go, please seek Sunny out and give he...

Not all do it that way, but I have one that does. She puts her head all the way up to her eyes under water. It may be a good thing, she turns fifteen tomorrow.

Hunting Southwest Okla.
Try to make some friends over in Walters. I found some pretty good quail hunting there two years ago.
I'm not sure where it's located but the Black Kettle grassland is also in the SW part of the state I believe. It gets pretty good reviews.

How much for shells?
In Dallas, TX of the better brands Winchester AA and Remington STS, the lowest recent price I have seen is $5.49 per box of 25. At Bass pro yesterday 25lbs of shot was $39.99.

Puppy growth rates
I've got a new litter of GSP puppies and have been monitoring their weight gain. The litter is four males and three females. From their fourth day to the 12th day all the males achieved a 100% increase in weight, the females achieved a 68% to 78% increase. Is this a normal or purely random occurrenc...

Reasons for more than two shells.....five shots, five quail on a covey rise 1987 south of Colorado City, Tx. with a 12 ga. Remington 1100. I've since changed to a 20 ga. Benelli Montefeltro and sometimes a Browning Superposed Lightning 20 ga. Gauges are kind of like waist sizes, I still wear a 34, b...

Free feed
I have free fed for at least 20 years. Yes, the big feeders that you put 40 lbs in. I have never had an adult GSP who's weight varied over one pound from one vet checkup to the next. My old GSP girl will turn fifteen in a couple of months God willing.
I did have one pointer that got a little heavy.

What gauge do you prefer
Shot a 1100 12 gauge for years, but switched to a Benelli Montefeltro 20 gauge about 8 years ago and haven't shot a 12 since. Of course I hunt about 90% quail and 10% dove.

Texas hunting
My lease is in North Central Texas (Shackleford Co.). It started ok last year and then deteriorated rapidly. I'm going to be surprised if there are any birds at all this year with the conditions....and its not a small place....4,000+ acres. We are going to have to look for an area that had timely ra...
