Re: PP vs an EP
Thanks for the recommendations. I don't know if I will ever have a pointer, not because I don't think they are great dogs, I just like the look of setters better. Right now I don't have the experience, time or resources to be competitive in the trials, even with a competitive dog so I will probably ...

Re: PP vs an EP
So getting back on track, Yawallac you were saying you were getting out of the pointer buisness and going with setters, or was it that you were going to build a Small Munsterlander capable of winning a coverdog trial and keep all the water work and retrieving, either way sign me up.

Re: PP vs an EP
I have a golden mutt that would swim for pleasure at -20. We have duck hunted at -5 near an electrical dam that keeps the water open. It was a slow hunt, he took a couple swims and rolled around in the snow.

Re: Should I do it?
I got a rescue golden a few years back and after i taught him to rollover and high 5 and whatever I thought theres got to be something else, so I started training him as a retriever. It didn't really work out, as he lacks a lot of desire so I got a versatile. My rational was, I have to go walk them ...

Re: Bad Day!
Pups go through the plateau effect. At one point or another they will forget everything for a bit. I have a golden who as a pup had more of these than I thought was possible. He would and did forget everything more than once. Honestly he had bouts where I swear he had forgotten his name, he would ju...

Re: Training progress
I have had some success with training the forced retrieve without the force. Now my dogs are not as solid as dogs that were properly force fetched but it has helped me get rid of some mouth problems. Simply go through the ff steps, you can open a dogs mouth easily by sticking your finger in between ...

Re: Waterfowl help with lab...
I thought it was weird for a lab to be cold at 35 degresse so I started thinking about puppy coats and adult coats, I did a little research and didn't find anything solid but from what I read a dog should get his adult coat around 10-12 months. If this is true I would imagine you shouldn't have any ...

Re: Waterfowl help with lab...
Is he gunshy? If not take him out some cold morning, get him running and toss bumpers in the water when he is feeling the heat and or jump shoot some ducks. Don't make him sit there freezing, take him for a little walk afterwards so he can warm up and dry off a bit. Gotta make sure this season is fu...

Re: Deer Hunters and Dogs
I guess most disagree but I believe that a dog's, any dog's, life is worth more than a deer on the wall...I find that very sad. Completely agree with most of what you said. In my province only conservation officers have the authority to shoot loose dogs, but a lot of hunters, including a lot of my f...

Re: Deer Hunters and Dogs
I bet NewBrunswick you give Pennsylvania a run for it's money when it come to crazies. I had the dog out on basically a 4 wheeler trail the other night and we met about 6 pickup trucks out for birds. There were spots I was walking that I was wishing I had of brang waders and these guys were driving ...

Re: Need Advice. My Brit flushes wild birds, not pointing
Could be a lot of things. If he is bumping these birds and not realizing you want him to point them then you may want to shoot a few to get him a taste of them. If he is finding lots and flushing and chasing he may just like chasing and flushing or he may not have a great nose and is not realizing t...

Re: Deer Hunters and Dogs
Archery season here opened on October 5th I believe and also runs to the 20th. I am not as worried about them for some reason, maybe it is misguided. However there is certainly not as many of them compared to guns.

Re: Deer Hunters and Dogs
Oct 25th - Nov 20th Grouse is from Oct 1st - Dec 4th. I am just dissapointed we haven't gotten on as many birds as I would have liked. Better make the best out of this weekend and the last 2 weeks. There are some trial grounds about an hour north that is closed to hunting but there are lots of birds...

Deer Hunters and Dogs
So deer season is starting here on Monday and I am not sure if I should be taking the pup out into the grouse woods during deer season as I have heard some horror stories. I am a pretty inexperienced grouse hunter and hunted behind, or infront of a boot licking golden last season so it wasn't much o...

Re: How to ?? GSP and waterfowl hunting
If you can get your dog to sit quitely for a while bring her. I brang my 10 month old SM out a couple times this year. By his second hunt he was just sitting there scanning the sky, It was pretty neat to look over at him at one point and look at what he was looking at. Sure enough it was a small flo...

Re: Where to go from here?
I don't see why a border collie couldn't make a serviceable retriever. I would advise against just going out and shooting a bird until the dog is properly introduced to the gun, see other threads. If she really loves retrieving then you could probably just toss dummies for her and have someone shoot...

Two Questions, Range and SM FDSB
Ok first I would like to know if a Small Munsterlander can be registered with the FDSB and be eligible to run in cover dog trials. He is currently only registered with NAVHDA. I am in Canada and I know the CKC will not recognize the NAVHDA registry but the AKC will so I would have to run around and ...

Couldn't tell you what breed has the most but my SM sure has a lot of retrieve in him. one of the first things i did when i got him home from the airport this winter was throw his toy for him and sure enough he brang it right back to me. He was very easy to get wet this spring even in his puppy fur ...

Re: Puppy Crate Training
I am going through the same thing, you aren't supposed to go to them when they are whining but they still have to go, a general rule is pups have to be let out an hour per month of age plus 1, so your 8 week old should generally have to relieve itself every 3 hours or so. What I was told to do is le...

My vet said her opinion was that cats are carnivores and should definately be on grain free but that dogs were more omnivores and that grain free was not neccesary.

Re: What makes your dog so good?
I think what makes my dog so good are his two stainless steel hips, or maybe it was his neutering at 12 weeks. It could also be my superior training or the mystique surrounding his pedigree. Either way he never ceases to trail deer when I am hunting grouse and never waivers from taking a good swim j...

Re: HUnt young GSP with retrievers
I am getting a Small Munsterlander and I currently have a 18 month old Golden and was wondering if anyone has succesfully hunted a combination like this. My Golden hardly ever finds birds, he mostly tracks fur when we are out but his obedience is solid. His Whoa command is near 100%. What I was wond...
