Re: Attachment
my Britt is very attached to me. This is the fourth dog I have had in my life, but my first Brittany, so I don't know if this is typical. But she literally has to be wherever I am all the time. I work nights, and during the day when I am sleeping, she will sit or lie outside the bedroom door and whi...

Re: Small hard lump on shoulder
if it is moveable it is probably in the subcutaneous tissue/skin, and probably a fatty tumor or something minor like that, possibly a pimple or other skin irritation, although you said it isn't painful. if it is non-moveable, it is something in the muscle/bone. could be due to an injury, could be so...

Re: hunting ...near or far ....what about standing still??
I have good luck with my Britt by calling to her, telling her "too far, too far!" and calling her back to me. when she comes back, I direct her towards a stand of brush or whatever cover is nearby, and she goes to work. through repetition she has figured it out.

along with the suggestions already posted, I would add that I found my pup using the AKC's website. it lets you choose the breed you want, and you can search by distance from your location.

Re: Lump on GSP Chest/Leg Area
my non-hunting dog is a 14 year old miniature poodle, and he has a small fatty tumor about the size of a quarter on the left side of his abdomen. it has been there for years, and hasn't changed in size. but it is more in the skin, doesn't really move around under the skin like I thought you were des...

Re: Low Protein recipes s
for gall bladder problems, you want a lower fat diet. the gallbladder secretes bile for the digestion of fats. a classic sign of gallbladder disease is pain after eating, especially fatty foods. the challenge will be to find a diet that is low fat and has enough protein.

Re: Lump on GSP Chest/Leg Area
it isn't painful to the dog when you touch it/move it? and no sign of any wound/drainage? it might be a swollen lymph node, which can be something relatively minor, or something more serious. either way, you should get the vet to check it out. good luck!

Re: can a dog run "big" ....just for fun? ....hurt hunting?
Dottie - I will take a different tack with my response. To a certain extent, range is less important. The willingness of the dog to go with you and stay with you is far more relevant. If your 2 year old will stop what it is dog and come back...all the way back...to you. when you give the come in co...

Re: eye irritation
I think sometimes a dog will get eye irritation from getting whipped by branches while they're running through the underbrush. my grandfather had a beagle that had protruding eyes, and he would be walking around blind for a few days after every hunt. they finally had to retire him from hunting.

is she acting normal? eating and stooling okay? If so, she probably just has an infection if the swelling is small and located at the abrasion. if she has a lot of bruising and swelling, it might be something more serious. it sounds like she needs to see the vet.

Staphylococcus is a group of bacteria that are pretty much on all of us (and our dogs) all of the time. Wounds provide the opportunity for Staph bacteria to cause infections. So your dog could have a staph infection, but some other injury or irritant to the skin was probably the catalyst for the inf...

I don't like the bell at all on my Britt. We tried it a couple of times, and were having trouble finding birds. Finally, I took the bell of mid-hunt and ending up finding and bagging a pheasant about 15 minutes later. I get why it is a good idea, but couldn't help feeling we were spooking the birds....

Switched things up today and hit the duck blind with fellow forum member Krakadawn and a couple of his retrievers in search of some divers. that sounds pretty good! he must be getting the idea already. my Brittany will misbehave -- mostly chewing on shoes, clothes, etc. -- when she needs exercise. so she's my motivation to get out every day for a good hunt or hike in the woods, and her daily off leash time is absolutely essential to her...

thanks for the information about the ginger. I am going to try it.
I thought she would outgrow the drooling, even though she knows we are going hunting and she loves that. It is not even the motion of the vehicle, because she will start as soon as she gets in the truck.
thanks again.

I have a 15-month-old Brittany. when she was a pup, she was very mouthy and a persistent biter. We tried all the things you have tried, and finally, all that seemed to work is I would grasp her muzzle and put my face in hers and say "NO BITE!!" -- not screaming it, but saying it very sternly/firmly....

Ginger has been proven to work. My Brittany (named Ginger, btw), drools terribly every time we go fo...

Hi - I am new to hunting with a gun dog, not new to hunting. I've been hunting for overe ten years, picking it up after hunting with my grandparents when I was a boy. Ginger is my Brittany, just over a year old and we are having a great first season. We've had great success with pheasants this fall....
