Don, thanks for the comment. That dog is the real deal. Here is the next picture in the sequence. Framing is off but you can see the bird on its way to the ground. Glad to see that. It say's everything needing to be said. Don't know who's dog that is but he has himself a real bird dog! :D :D :D :D

One of my old pointer's, Kate, would chase thewing on a string as long as I'd play with it. She never pointed the thing in her life. I don't recommend playing with the wing on a string but I also don't know anybody that hasen't done it. Don't do that but I do it with every new puppy! :mrgreen:

Whaat ever it is you call finished, I would take it completely thru to where I wanted it on pigeons and when it was right there, introduce pen birds. Theen when it was right there, introduce wild birds. Keep everything in an orderly progression.

I think your can correct the problem with the e-collar but I suspect your gonna end up with a collar wise dog. Probably being collar wist will be no big thing. I think the majority of people never let their dog out with out one on. Then collar wise or not, you got the handle!

If a true amature, new person to trialing, makes a mistake that would cost him/her, I'll let them know right away and keep the dog on the ground. I never suggested a way to handle their ddog but would talk to them later and tell them what I saw. Of course after the staake I'd tell any of the handler...

Just because you can do something with one dog in four months doesen't mean you can do it with another. And of course what you get done with one dog in four months another dog may do in three.

Sure. I think it should be required. A handler following a bird with a shotgun can't block his dog very well while following a bird. I don't remember all the rules very well any more. Is it required in SH and MH? Should be.

I would be hesitant about a dog that needed to be whoa'd unless it was a quiet whoa one time. Figure that the handler that whoa's several time's, loudly, thinks his might break. Now that didn't occur to me. Mixing won't lower the protien will it? I like that part about oyster shell. I threw some out on the ground for my chickens yesterday and found my pigeons eating it. Usually I just keep red grit in the loft. Those pigeons really seemrd to like the osyter shell!

In AKC the rule used to be that the dog can move from cover to mark a bird. I think it said "so long as it does not make any signicent forward move". Very desireable trait in a bird dog. You said "sometimes he just seem's suprized by them". Good chance he came to close on the up wind side and never knew they were there. He pointed the second contact. Don't nick him, give him the benifit of the doubt. If you don't know for sure what happened, always give the dog the benifit of doubt.
