I will be doing what I can to get him on birds and in top shape before then. He usually always retrieves to hand, so that part will he...

Speaking of Dove hunting. I was going to start a thread with a question. I figured I might as well ask it here. I haven't hunted doves before. It sounds like great fun. I saw quite a few today when I took my dog out training. I plan to go this year. I would appreciate some tips on hunting them. I al...

Training report. Pics!
I needed to get out with Cooper. He just turned one year old last week, and I am trying to have him ready for his first NSTRA trial next month. I picked up a few pen raised quail and a couple of pheasant hens. I headed out this morning at 5 a.m. for my dads property. It is about 150 miles each way, ...

:D I decided that Cooper needs a huntin' partner. I should have this new little Pointer at my house within a couple of weeks. I am very excited about this little guy. Ouch!! $500.00 for a mixed breed bird dog.
I was looking througha local online classifieds service and found this guy trying to sell Pointer/Setter cross pups for $500.00. Are people really that crazy? IMHO pups like this should be maybe $50 bucks to cover the costs and then also a wruitten agreement to spay or nueter. On another note, they ...

Just found some fantastic training grounds.
It is actually a place sponsored by the Utah Division of Wildlife. It is a large shooting range only a 5 minute drive from where I work. I had heard that they had some bird dog training grounds, so I stopped in to see what it was all about. Apparantly it is 950 acres of varied landscape including hi...

Sometimes I'll tie a pigeon to an empty plastic coke bottle filled with approx 1/2 in. of water. This will let the pigeon fly for about 40 yards or so, and saves birds.......... Nice variation on the "carding" of pigeons. I may have to try that. I need to locate some pigeons. They are pretty scarce...

Commmon' Man! I don't think we're doing too bad. We've only been online for 3 1/2 months... Grant. No offense meant. You have created a fantastic place. I love the V-bullien format. Very easy to navigate and your choice of colors is pleasing. Not to mention the very cool pictures you have edited in...

My own form of "roading"
The last few weeks I have decided to work hard at getting myself and my dog in shape for the upcoming hunting season. I wanted to build some muscle bulk and some stamina in my dog. I hope to have him ready for a NSTRA trial in September. I also started the Atkins diet recently for myself. I started ...

What time of year is best to get a new pup?
Does anybody have any opinions on what time of year is the best to get a new pup? My Pointer will be one year old next month. By hunting season 14 or 15 months. He was born in August. I feel like he will be a fairly good dog this year, his first season. I also feel like he missed out on a lot of goo...

E-collar issues.
My Pointer Pup, Cooper, will be 1 year old next month. He has progressed very well lately. He was good on the commands he has been taught so far (come, kennel, whoa, and fetch sometimes heel). This has all been taught on the check chord with most of my information from Delmar Smith's book and things...

I went out to a NSTRA field trial here in Utah on Saturday. Just wanted to check it out and meet a few people. I am hoping to run my dog in one of these by this fall. If you have never seen one, get out and do it. Very fun, and there are a lot of neat dogs to see. My dog is a little over 9 months ol...

I took Cooper over to the local school tonite. While my kids played, I worked him on Whoa and also a few retrieves. He is coming along, but still likes to take a couple steps forward when he is excited. Had some great fun. http://www.hunt101.com/img/144561-big.jpg http://www.hunt101.com/img/144563-b...

A little about me and my dog.
I have an 9 month old English Pointer that I have been working with. This is my first bird dog and he is a lot of fun. His name is Cooper. I live in Utah. I plan on getting involved in some NSTRA trials here. Mostly looking to have a decent bird dog in the end and have a lot of fun with him. I might...

Those that use it. Please explain your method for using the barrel. I got a barrel and it is painted with a pretty glossy paint. The dog slips off very easily. Is this the point? I duct taped a piece of carpet on the side and tried that a few times. I haven't got serious about the barrel method yet....
