Re: Stop It !

Most of the dogs I work with are head cases brought on by someone that claims to be a trainer that has overdone the shock collar. So there are trainers and then there are actually trainers. The duct tape thing is the first thing Dave Walker told me and is a valuable bit of advice. As to the holiday,...

Re: Deer chasing

I will go against the grain a little. I don't think a 5 month old puppy needs to be lit up. Most pups will chase anything and most well bred pups will quit on their own after they what they are hunting for ie birds. If the dog persists at a year old then its time to stop this behavior.

If your dog does not have a visible conformation fault ie cow hocked and or down in the pasterns, you might want to have the hips xrayed. Sometimes a dog with very short pasterns will not be a smooth goer. If none of these things apply you might just be stuck with a clunky gait. I say this because i...

A dog probably can't run to fast, they can outrun their nose. All dogs scenting ability is not equal some just have a lot better noses than others. A dog with less than an average nose will likely bump more birds than a dog with an excellent nose. If a dog is trained to be steady on birds and does s...

If your dogs fight each other they will likely fight other dogs. If you are a hunter this will be trouble when hunting with friends and their dogs and is a good way to lose them. I don't let my dogs fight under any circumstances and they get punished if they even growl. That means a spanking. Two ma...

The short of it is buy a few pheasants plant them using a bird launcher. Use a check cord and let the dog point if he takes a step launch the bird. Do not let him chase. Repeat until he stands to your liking. These birds run by nature if a dog does not learn to be careful he will continue to bump an...

In your position I would at least look into a well started dog. If you then feel the need for a pro it will cost less to get the dog the way you want it. First a treeing walker is not really considered a fox hound unless you are in the far west where a fox will tree. Try a running walker, a july , or a trigg. These breeds are used for coyotes, fox, and deer.

First of all what did you expect from a 5 month old pup. There is no reason for a trainer to keep a pup that young over three months. I would pick up your pup, if the result is not up to your expectations count it as experience and go on. After that length of time unless this dog has derby quality a...
