I'm not sure what the truth is here. If you have to train a pointing dog to point you may very well have a cull.

I don't know why some are a little hard on Neil but if you are going to shoot birds that are not pointed (properly) why have a pointer? I'm a retired cattleman and farmer. No one told me I had to farm and I never told anyone they had to hunt. Would you rather the gov pay a farmer or would you rather pay a preserve to hunt. Some folks that complain about stockmen or farmers shouldn't talk with their mouth full.

If the dog is a pointer he is an ugly one (show bred perhaps?) He does not look like a good example of either breed. So cross bred or poorly bred take your pick.

I have never hunted on a preserve and from what I have seen on TV probably never will. To each his own though. The main bird we hunt is chukar. Wild chukar and pen raised chukar do not behave the same and don't even act like the same bird.

I need to ask though, setters and EP's are absolutely the best at the trial game, if you were serious about making it to the next level why not just a few? It depends on the dog but I do it if that is what will work. It will work better on a dog that has a lot of point and wants to use it. I use a launcher mostly for backing drills.

Sadly, much of this could be said about the Britts, V's, setters, and most other breeds. And 100 years ago they were breeding setters to pointers to improve the pointers. Ever now and then you will see a long haired pointer, a throwback. I hate cheaters. If you ever see a long haired pointer you be...

Anyone that thinks something was bred into pointers to add style is delusional. I have seen a lot of gsps at trials that looked like docked pointers and ran a lot like them as well.

The dna test for field trials simply shows that the parents are actually the parents. If mars testing is ever used it may show which dogs are cross bred and which are not. Then the breed clubs or akc or whom ever can decide How much pointer can be in another breed and still be run as that breed. I d...

The dogs I see in trials out here don't look much like the German dogs anyway so why is the color so important? Good dogs make good handlers. A good handler may get the very best out of a very average dog where a novice might not. It still takes dog power as one can't make a silk purse from a sows ear.

I have seen dogs that do not like the sharp sound of a blank or rifle. A shotgun never bothered so you might steer away from the blanks or muffle the sound in some way. As some have said show the dog a bird for every shot.
