Re: Dog bedding
There have been a lot of problems with dogs eating cedar shavings then having severe intestinal problems. If, as Steve says, sleeping on carpeting isn't an option, I have my best luck with marsh hay. Straw is horrible but marsh hay doesn't absorb as much water and has a pleasant smell. 👍🏻 I found m...

No, but I wouldn’t know how to quantify that even if it did. I only used a bit of it sparingly mixed with other material. I have heard the same, but never verified. The fact that wood chips of any kind don’t hold up as well, don’t work as well as an insulator and don’t stay in the house very well, i...

Re: Dog bedding
If you are not allergic to it, I much prefer using a grass hay. Much less dust than straw, and it doesn’t break down nearly as fast. If you use shavings alone, the dogs will get to the bottom of them in short order. I have added some cedar for bugs in the past, but in recent seasons just Timothy Gra...

When I do place, it is normally to kennel. I don’t care too much what they do in that place as long as they obey the command and stay there. If not released, they usually choose to lay down on their own in short order. It doesn’t take too long for “kennel” and “go lay down” to become interchangeable...

Best wishes for you and your dog getting through this rough patch. If you check in with Dr. Google, my advice is to be careful of the info sources. Ckirsch, Best of luck with the dog, I hope it works out for both of you. If you are diligent about working each dog individually and have the time, there is no downside as far as actual field training in having two. But having two young dogs around the house, or in the house can be tough. It makes it a bit harder to enforce what you have taught if they are not kennel dog...

Cheetome, Sorry I read your original post, and had to take care of some Dad duties before I responded. I forgot to mention two things: 1) If you carry a tethered live pigeon in your vest, it works great as a puppy lure. When they are further than you are comfortable with, (hopefully more than 50 yards and growing), get the pups attention and put it in the air to flap around a bit and reel it in befor...

Re: Self hunting
Short answer, you should probably get a different dog. If quartering within shotgun range performance is what you are after, a GSP was a very poor choice. Perhaps a flusher would be much better suited to your desires, but even then, it would need a whole lot more time than 5 months to figure things ...

I have the Irish Setter Wing shooters and they are ok but not great honestly. Garrison, I think the difference here is breed difference. For setters and pointers I have always told people that if they hold point (most well bred dogs naturally do this), come when called and know what NO means, they are huntable. However, this is not true of versatile dog's where they are expe...

I share the school of thought that I want my young dogs to figure it out, rather than be commanded to do so when it comes to on game performance. In my experience, cold is much less of a concern than heat when a dog is hunting. The only time I have had a dog shut down in the cold, it wasn’t all that cold out. 13 weeks is pretty darn young to be worrying about losing a handle on a pup. I expect most of it is your worry, and less of it is the pup’s accelerator peddle. You may want to get to a more manageable field rather than the thick woods for your initial puppy time, and bird introduction. Get out and l...
