Re: One for the AA set.
I would think most "bird dogs" would get bored running and running and never finding birds, what is the point? They're just running to run off at that point. A hunting dog hunts. Birds or no birds, the dog continues to hunt. If the dog won't hunt when there are no birds it would be rather pointless...

A lot of people will tend to say it's because you don't want to teach a dog two commands via a collar on the neck. For example, if you're running your dog and Whoa him from way off and he moves then you stimulate him he can tend to recall because he was taught to recall via the collar around the ne...

It's an eCollar. You put it around the dog's flank and if you stimulate him at that location he's inclined to not move. Works great if you know how to do it. I usually don't do it, but both my girls kept creeping in the breaking process, so I conceded. If you are planning on trying it, make sure yo...

I wouldn't use a trainer for bird intro, just watch Perfect Start - unless you don't have time for the dog. Steadying at a trainer at an older age after a season of wild birds seems more worth it.

You can get the glow collars with name plate, delivered, for like $11 on gun dog supply... is the material *that* much better? I've had one for 2 years now, no problems except some color fade.

Let's see. Shorthairs tend to orver run game, chew downed bird, and generally have noses that mislead. Britts tend to find game at any range, have soft mouths, and know the difference between "bleep" and game birds. You can also keep them in the house. As for the "little groundhog, crack, even my s...

I think the other way around. The dogs that have drive and can run and are put on a lot of wild birds early are the best trial dogs. They're the ones that will go out and find birds every time in any condition because they know where to look and how to hunt the cover.

I'd get him on wild birds as much as possible. Be quiet, let him find them and run out. It will teach him to be steady and not crowd them (and also that he can't catch them).

I've never seen a Weim that hunted well and a lot of the ones I've been around I wouldn't let my dog around them. if you want a dog that hunts at your ankles then maybe you'd like it, but you'd have to walk over the birds yourself.

imo it is too early if the dog can't be called in with some sort of expectation that it will come. besides that, which is more of a safety concern, wild birds will make a better bird dog than i ever will :D On thousands and thousands of acres + GPS and ATV - won't be too worried about losing him......
