Re: Is this the right place for me?
If you just want to shoot and hunt give it a whirl, but most bird dogs have prey drive and that's what get's them thru the training to be a hunting partner. I'm guessing if you started training your boxer to do stuff by command instead of want too then he would quit. In other words if you made him s...

Re: You want to see what's wrong with our education system?
Public schools would lose money but they would also lose students so they wouldn’t need as much money. They could get rid of problem kids today, they have alternative schools set up just for troubled kids. They will not though because they lose the money that is attached to that kid. It’s also polit...

Private schools have the option of not taking the children with discipline problems and not taking the children with low test scores, thus the difference in price and test scores. I am completely against a voucher system unless private schools play by the exact same rules as the public system, whic...

Throw a ball down the hallway and tell the puppy "fetch" as he's running to it. When he's on his way back I tell him "here". This has always worked at laying a good foundation for me.

DonF is right on the money. Start popping birds when he is close to birds whether upwind or downwind, pop the bird and make him stop. This is stop to flush training. You don't have to get every bird pointed to have a good training day.

Re: You want to see what's wrong with our education system?
I send my kids to a Christian school because I like the learning environment they have. I also believe the number one problem with our school systems is bad parenting and the lack of 2 parent households. Good parents will see that their kids are good students. The second biggest problem is lack of d...

Did you do a lot of "Wing on a String" training? Something I would do is try planting birds in very light cover or short grass where the bird can see the dog coming and I would do away with the launchers until she is using her nose.

Jeff, they SHOULD have bird work to be called back. You could run grey hounds with the same results without the bird work. When you talk about the best of the best they should have bird work to even be considered.

Out of the 6 that went birdless how many had unproductives? Is there to much emphasis on run and not enough on bird finding ability. I know it's a trail but a dog should have bird work to be called back.

I think the one in Iowa had dogs from 13 states with 26 out of 30 going clean with birds shot on coarse . I imagine this trial will be about the same. Looking forward to coming up.
That's pretty tough! I would like to see all retrieving trials ran with first bird on course shot.

I have never ran a wild bird trial but it sounds like the dogs and the handlers just don't know how to handle wild birds. You would think these dogs could relocate and find the birds if the birds ran out from under them. If these dogs can't pen a covey of quail they would go crazy on the grouse up here in east TN, Roadrunner has nothing on these grouse. Maybe the AKC needs to dump about 500 birds out the weekend before...

I have never seen too much dog, BUT I have seen not enough handler!!! All joking aside there is certian lines of dogs that increase your chances of making the type of dog you want. People that have to see their dog the whole time would be wise not to by one out of a all-age stock.

I've heard more than one field trialer comment on how a dog has to good of nose. A dog that points it's birds aways off makes it harder on the handler to produce a bird. For those of us who love to play games but are hunters first, we want the full choke noses. IMO because of the bird numbers, SOME ...

This is going to be just my HIGHLY subjective opinion, but I would expect the most competitive dogs to range in the neighborhood of 100-300 yards.
