Re: To seperate or not to seperate...?

I would definately seperate.I have dealt with this situation before.A friend wanted me to see what I could do with his two 8 month old setters that had always been together. When you took them out together, you might as well have had 1 dog, they did nothing without the other. If one was scared of someth...

Pointer ticking

As I have said before I have always pretty much been a setter man.I have had a couple of pointers over the years, but they weren't out of big name dogs, just good local meat dogs.As I have been looking around at pointers,I have come across several with HEAVY ticking, look like long tailed shorthairs.I ...

Sounds like he had some kind of bad experience in the field,go back in time and think on it,you might find your answer. Was he hunting with different dogs this year or by himself?

Re: Looking to add another bird dog.

I would ask yourself what you want as far as range. If your setter is already hunting out at what you like as a maximum range, dont get a bigger running dog,or even a dog that ranges about the same as they will carry each other out even farther. If you like the range you have now,you might look at a cl...

Re: Pointing styles judged.

I think another way to describe the difference is this.In that last photo, you could cut everything out of the photo but the dog and post it on a white background, everyone would still be able to look at the dog and know that it is on point. You could do the same with a dog standing stiff legged with h...

Re: Pointing styles judged.

That last photo is a perfect example of a natural intense looking point in my opinion.Notice the legs still crouched, you can tell he stopped moving suddenly.Dogs don't run around stiff legged like they are on stilts, with thier heads pointed up in the air, when I see one pointed like that it doesn't ...

Re: Pointing styles judged.

I have never been a fan of what I would call field trial style,it just doesn't appeal to me.What I mean by that is standing straight legged and tall with the head back, when I see a photo of a dog like this it doesn't even look like they are pointing to me,it looks like they are just standing there.I...

I had to learn to take a wide swath in front of this dog to kick up the birds, and many times go back and take an even wider one because he pointed birds so much farther away,He also would not always be pointed directly at the bird, when he entered the scent cloud,he pointed solid, the scent was stron...

I didn't teach the old setter a thing, but I have learned how to train a dog to get the most out of the nose they have.I like to work a pup across the wind blowing over the bird.I know exactly where the bird is,so when I first see the pup turn his head in that direction I will stop him there. No reaso...

I think these shelters and rescues should work with honest hunters and trainers. What would be wrong with letting a person take a couple of dogs for a day and trying them out on a bird and cap pistol? If they were good bird dogs they would now have a chance at getting placed.Instead they want you to ...

I had a shorthair pup that showed no interest at all in a wing on a string, but the first time I put him on a planted bird he locked up solid.Dont be surprised if the first time you work your dog on a bird he does nothing but try and get close enough to catch it.Many dogs will do this at first.I have...

I agree with Ray,I dont thing you can teach a pup anything too early. If he will already stop and point for a few seconds, why would you want to let him break point and chase? Teach him whoa and use your rope when on birds till he stays put on point.

A sad fact to consider is that the majority of the time the reason the dog is in the pound is that he was a wash out of a hunting dog,or aggresive or timid,or who knows what, and was probably turned in or turned loose for that reason. You have to ask youself,If I lost my prize hunting dog, wouldn't I g...
