Re: Training a dog in an suburban enviroment?

I own and like Urban Gun Dogs, but i woudnt recommend it to a Lab owner. It is pretty spaniel specific, and the "urban" aspect of it was mostly common sense, IMO.

Re: Training a dog in an suburban enviroment?

While your pup will need a place for gun condition and live bird work, but i do a lot of training in city and state parks. I imagine training pointers like this is tougher, as they are not really hunting companions, but kenneled, bird finding machines. I have known some really great Labs that...

Re: Looking for a Couple Pigeons in Baltimore County, Maryland

Keeping birds alive humanely at your house is a terrible pain. A few suspects would be: 1. Urban feed stores that cater to pigeon racers and cockfighters often have pigeons for sale. (not usually in the best parts of town, but i am a regular at one of several in my city) 2. Take your wife to a Spani...

Re: Amateur wins NCC National Field Trials (article)

They're not pointers, and the idea of a 20-30 lb serious gun dog might be a bit of a surprise, but working cockers make a lot of sense for a lot of bird hunters. The ability to get under cover that taller dogs go right over is a big advantage. Most have a natural retrieve (though there is a raging d...

Full disclosure, this involves flushing dogs, but still very cool, and def a big upset:

Anyone here have pointers trained NOT to retrieve?

What a show! Just returned from a quail hunt on a southern USA plantation. EPs, 2 at a time pointing coveys, shooters dismounting 2 at a time to shoot. Pointers were steady to wing, shot, fall, and retrreive, as "wagon dogs" (labs/springers/cockers) leapt off at command and were handled through most...

Re: Help in identifying dog breed

I'd go to the Cockers in the Field site (www.fieldcockers.com) and click meet the dogs . You may see a lot of filed champion cockers that resemble springers at first glance. How tall is she/he, and how much does she weigh? My cocker looks for all the world like a mini-springer, but she is short (15 ...

Heat cycle while at trainer

He everyone, My 8 mo old bitch is scheduled for a 3 month stay at a trainer in mid-December. My question is, if im planning to spay, is it better to do it now so she can recover fully before she goes, or wait and let her get through the first cycle (possibly while away), and then spay? Is there a lo...

Re: Any Way to tell if Bitch had pups?

What would an honest, professional trainer do if there was an unplanned pregnacy of a client's dog while she was with him? Let the client know and ofer to have the pregnancy terminated asap? Or is there another course of action that would be less disruptive and harmful for the bitch?

starting to lose control...

Would appreciate any thoughts. Hve been trying to take it slow in regards to pressure with my 7 month old E. Cocker. She has flushed and had about 15 quail killed over her so far with no indication of any gun sensitivty. She has never quit looking for a dead bird, and hasn't wanted to chew or destro...

Second that camelback shirt, I have it and wear it a lot. It will easily hold a quart of scotch, and is hardly noticable under my suit at work.

Re: Taking my dog dove hunting this weekend

If you can, haul a bag (or even a block) of ice out to your spot, and 2x the water that you think you need. My springers hated doves, b/c the feathers seemed to stick in their mouths more than other birds, so give thew water after each retrieve. At my opening day shoot last year, a lot of guys were ...

Re: First Bird Contact

Well, she is a cocker, but the breeder told me if she gets over 35 lbs, i could register her as a springer. At any rate, I think that I will have her tail docked a little further to increase our chances in the show ring.

Re: First Bird Contact

Thanks, iPhone does a decent job. It was really interesting. I wouldn't calli it a retrieve. My goal was to have her just have a good time with a flapper, and build some confidence around a live bird. She absolutely loved it. I just watched her and tried to shut up. She would come to me but, was pos...

Some good new today at least. Tall Timbers Research in Tallahassee is reporting a very good hatch in S.Ga/N. FL. You may want to consider going to work for them. I have pasted the article below. I have an MBA from a Florida B-school, i work in corp. finance, and couldn't do my job without it. We do shoot a lot of preserve birds (the duck and dove hunthing is still really great at least). I think though, the past few years have shown that going back to a non top-ten business school to sit ou...

Re: What breed of dog would you NEVER want to own?

I think I did a very poor job making my point. I was trying to advocate the eradication of all dogs that we have bred to fight for our entertainment. For every person that is attacked by a bully breed, dozens of pets are shredded in dog parks, and on street corners without any media attention at all...

I am dissapointed in most of you. You guys of all people should understand that beeding has a massive impact on a dog. That silly survey link is the definition of a straw man argument. They were nearly all fighting dogs. Pitbulls just happen to be the most popular in the U.S.. Fighting dogs, at thei...

cocker puppy training

Hi Guys- I'm bringing along a now four month old working cocker (all of 17 lbs so far :-). I have found your discussions really helpful for a first-time owner. I have a couple of questions that it looks like havent been adressed in a while: 1. How do you start the process of teaching sit (stop) to t...
