Here's a nice listing of setter breeders. You'll find all of the different types of hunting setters on these listings. http://www.versatiledogs.com/kennels/engsetter.html Some additional links to check out: http://englishsetterspeak.blogspot.com/ http://www.birddogsforever.com/birdhunt/breeder_page...

Thanks for the comments and please keep them coming. I have never owned a gundog and I don't want to get over my head or make a stupid decision. I want Fido to curl up at our feet, play ball and frisbee with the kids, and traipse thru the woods with me and my boy. I am not a professional guide or tr...

Anyone have comments?? I saw an English Setter gal yesterday. About 11 weeks. Great dog. There was a pigeon tied nearby. Other older setters in the kennel were on point - all lined up. The two pup sisters ignored the bird. At one point they even ran around and didnt even notice it. I may check out D...

Choosing a Dog
I am researching dogs - looking to get our family's first bird dog. I have been focusing on Brittanys, but started also researching Llewellin and English Setters. I have a couple of questions: 1) Are there any key differences between the Brit and the Seter in terms of how they hunt? 2) What about as...

I simply could not find a dealer willing to do a transfer from a non-FFL private party. I'm in Tampa, this is not a small town, gun laws here are not overly strict, but I flat out could NOT find a dealer who would cooperate. Lordy that is hard to believe. I am in New Jersey and have bought 5 or 6 g...

These will go quick on shotgunworld.com I would guess. Posting pics definitely moves guns easier. If you register there some people may be wary of your recent joining the site, so mention you heard about the site over on gundogforum, and give your username on this forum so they can see you have been...

I am spending the week at the in-laws in Northwest Houston. Any good field breeders out this way? In katy? Tomball?
Thanks,
Gary

There is a great book by an autistic woman, Temple Grandin, called "Thinking in Pictures" I believe. She has degrees in animal husbandry of some sort, and as an autistic person is able to connect with animals in a certain, special way. It is a great read for any NT (normal thinker) to try to get som...

Frankly, if you even hit close to what he is looking for he will be impressed. He probably has in mind exactly what he wants, so don't be upset (even encourage him) to exchange for what he wants. The thought that you researched and tried to get him what he is looking for will be very meaningful. My ...

Well, I got the pedigrees today and it appears these are really show dogs. Only one dog a couple of generations removed had a JH next to its name. So I may pass, especially at those prices. The guy has many pictures on his site of the dogs hunting and pointing, but there is no proven lineage of perf...

Now nobody will allow you to cross their land and I am trying to come up with a concept that would allow hunters to hunt on this private land. I would go around and ask permission from farmers (as they own most of the land), and then for a fee of say $50/yr you would get a map of land where you can...

Interesting. She is fairly tall, so the shorter 13.5 inch length of pull on the 870 youth would accomodate a nice adjustable butt pad or gel pad to fit just right. And with the shorter barrel, the overall weight of the gun is centered closer to her body which would help with handling and avoiding fa...

My wife, who is XS/S, has found that a 20 guage semi-auto has more felt recoil than a 20 guage o/u. After shooting 25 or so shells from each she would much rather shoot the o/u. So, take that for what it's worth. The semi she shot was a beretta and it kicked harder with the exact same loads as the ...

You may want to check shotgunworld on Stoeger opinions. They are a bit mixed. Quality control is a bit of an issue. What is her height and weight? 1) I'd definitely go with a 20 gauge, period. Why constrain her with a .410? Success breeds fun. 2) You may consider the 870 Express Youth Model. Swings ...

First Post - Looking at Britts - Newbie needs help
Hi there! I am looking to get my first sporting dog and looking for a reality check and advice, etc. I am married with three kids aged 13, 10, and 3. The 10 year old just started hunting with me and got his first birds this season - the 13 year old isn't interested. We live in NJ and will hunt the s...
