Ezzy,
Have you considered taking a moratorium on food related posts? Folks may like to have a discussion that doesn't turn into an argument with you.

+1. Find a dog that was started right and for sale for the right reasons. You'll be able to hunt over it this fall and enjoy doing it. As far as the leash goes, I put mine on a stakeout first. Let them give into the pressure without associating with you first.

Your expectations of your dog are unreasonable. An 8 week puppy can do no wrong and you should have zero expectations, especially outside for the next few months. Socialize the dog well, take it on puppy walks in all types of different places, expose it to water and birds, let it learn to hunt. That...

Some videos of 12 week pup
Looks like a lot of fun. What'd you take the videos with? IMO, I would allow the pup to interact with the bird more without your involvement. When she gets in the area of the bird, stay back and allow her to figure it out. She might point, she might not, let her go in on the bird and make the natura...

Get them liking the crate- feed them in it, put a long with on I'm it in there with the door open, etc. dog is going to cry, whine and bark. Going to have to live with it. The behavior will eventually extinguish itself.

Introduced 4 mo old puppy to birds this weekend
I'd put the brakes on the thought of gun intro. The op commented that his dog watched the bird fly, I wouldn't introduce the gun until that dog is really getting after that bird hard. There are no advantages of introducing te gun before you are 100% sure the dog is ready. To the original poster, it ...

A place to train and a few reliable sources for birds. Nothing more frustrating than not being able to get your hands on birds. I would also recommend training with mo. Sounds like great bird intro. On the a good track. The best way to bring out the natural point is to let him knock and chase loose planted birds. Fly a couple of those quail out into some cover or very lightly plant them. Let him discover, bump and chase. He'll be pointing like a rock star in no tim...

I enjoyed Ray's story, but I like to differentiate between honest bird dog and honest house dog. We've been on the wrong side of both. Re: need help building range/search
Jerrod, I think the best thing would be to find a bird supplier- wild pigeons, quail, chukar, whatever. Shipping, driving, begging, whatever it takes to get birds. The birds will bring out your dog's natural desire. Try to plant them in a manner she cannot catch them, walk around with her, let her f...

Besides house manners, a source of birds and a few different pieces of land to run your dog on would be the extent of things I would be worried about through about 6 months or so. It doesn't matter what you feed or how much it costs or where you get it if the dog is not absorbing the food. This dog exhibits some symptoms of decreased pancreatic function. Provideded there are no other maturity / pressure issues, Put your boot under him and tap him real gently on the shins / knees, he'll stand. He'll eventually figure out what you want, no need to get crazy or excited or try to fix it tomorrow.

No reason to get excited. Search some of the older puppy posts for good ideas of what to focus on. Most folks will agree that you do not want to emphasize obedience at such a young age. Focus on exploring the world and exposure to game birds, water, tweet tweets, etc.

If the pups are not pointing the coveys, they need to keep busting them until they start pointing them. I agree with others that they need to learn they need to point by realizing they can't catch. You can take chase out of the dog, you can't artificially put point in them.

I will second that it isnt a big deal. A dog can differentiate between stalking a toy in the house and finding game. Two pics of my now 5 month old pup. Jolene pointing tux and jolene pointing birds. One had nothing to do with the other. http://i1140.photobucket.com/albums/n579/cmc274/IMG00593-20110...
