Re: JH TEST IN MICHIGAN AREA??

the CKC, AKC and NAVHDA are all a ways away from me unfortunately, we have to drive like 3 hours for training days and jerseys UT test is almost 5 hours away so i dont mind driving but try to find closer if we can, we just want her to achieve all the titles in all the clubs and do some confirmation...

My wife and I got invites as well (thinking it is everyone.) We haven't gone to volunteer but the breeders we got our Weim from have and they said it was great.

FDJ (Field Dog Junior), FD (Field Dog) and FDX (Field Dog Excellent). Could be wrong but I think Ruth was looking at AKC Hunt Tests because they are typically closer to her then the CKC ones.

AKC keeps the different group tests seperate, but UKC (HRC) retrieveing tests for example are open to versatiles.

Lincoln that is one of the nicest tails I have seen on a weim. Yea actually the nicest. You don't see many that hold a point like that. Lots of others that are really cool though.

I will run my boy even in hotter weather (it gets fairly warm here but the worst part is the humidity in the summer), but the locations where we do training have water for swimming to cool down. I also keep a very close eye on him since he will push him self too hard if I let him run to long :? . Us...

I didn't say navhda was a joke, did I. They're tests not trials. And most people who set the standards don't have any idea what they're doing. Read it again. True you didn't write it directly, though to say the people who set the standards have no idea what they are doing somewhat implies you hold ...

I wouldn't waste your time on a JH title. It's not worth the time, effort or money to me. Just my thoughts. I like the JH title if people will do it right and not train for it. It is a natural ability test or was supposed to be and that is what I want to see in any dog. SH is ok as it shows mtraina...

Always an interesting discussion even if it has been hashed out many times before :). Re: Price of pups to turn a profit?

By any reasonable measurement I don't believe a "hobby breeder" can profess to lose money selling pups; owning sporting dogs comes with a cost and selling pups mitigates some of that cost. I just had a litter of only two and I sold one, I am $800 better off than I would have been. I would see "hobb...

My point is with the folks who are doing it as a hobby, want to claim they cant make money on a litter because of all of the expenses. The sire/dam, training, their hourly wage, ect. So if they didnt breed that dog, would they then not train it? Not feed it? Not take it to the vet? Not do tests/tri...

I was not suggesting that those who do make money don't care about the breed, I don't think the two are mutually exclusive, just that some do breed and not make money at it for varying reasons. As for what constitutes a breeder, I think that is open to interpretation and varies really by breed and a...

I promise you that no one gets into breeding dogs to lose money, and no one stays in it to lose money. I think this depends on what you qualify as 'getting into breeding dogs.' If you are referring to somewhat larger scale operations where it is the person's livelyhood (their business ) I would agr...

Weimaraners for me. I had lots of dogs growing up with my family, but the Weim is the first one for my wife and I together, and the breed in general seems to develop a very special bond with their owners.

I like most versatiles, and find DDs (slick coated) and Pointers particularly interesting.

The difference I see are the people who work a full time job, then also train/trial/breed, and in doing so, its more of a hobby than a business, yet they expect their hobby to be profitable. That just doesnt make sense. Hobbies cost money. And the extent of what is included in the cost of the litte...

I am hearing about the expense of keeping, training, and the cost of competing the bitch and/or male dog. I don't see how this figures in on whether or how much profit you make on a litter. New to the board (hi by the way) but from my discussion with several great breeders it is often not the cost of the actual breeding (though it can add up) but the cost of the work to train and prove your dog before it is bred. Birds, gas, travel, testing/trialing, etc, etc, etc adds up to a huge amo...
