Re: Grouse are nesting in the U.P.

Hopefully, that hen grouse was not pushed off her nest. If she left willingly then it is likely early in the incubation. Pray for good weather in 3 weeks or so and for a month-ish thereafter. Drumming is most often heard, and so noted, in the Spring breeding season...some studies have indicated that...

Re: comparing berettas?

Just a note on shotgun triggers. Pull weight becomes an issue only at either extreme or when shooting a very light shotgun for game. Have a trigger that is less responsive, or slow, however and shooting flying increases in difficulty whether it be targets or birds. I eventually went to a Bowen relea...

Re: looking for new guns

12 Beretta BUL w/ 24" barrel. Doubles are nice in that type terrain tho...CZs are all the rage now but a solid 20 gauge Beretta O/U is hard to beat. Choke tubes are of near zero importance in grouse hunting....most guns today will have them anyway. If you have 3 setter pups in the far southern apps....

Re: us open pheasant trials?

.... One mans trash is another mans treasure if you get my drift. Certainly true, as a general statement. I prefer my setters to be under a pheasant, or grouse for that matter, when it drops as well....going on 46 years of birdhunting indicates that is a good thing...to me. Relocation is perfectly ...

Re: us open pheasant trials?

It would be a perfect event for a Nike ad. It would be an even better event for an anti-hunter to use the footage to make a point...inaccurate and skewed as that point might be. Hunters and hunting are as threatened from in-house almost as much as they are threatened from outside. We ignore or ratio...

Re: More Astro Mods

I prefer the bell as well as an Astro in the grouse woods, not for pheasant but ruffed grouse, then yes....never saw it beating on anything tho. I suspect an innertube would help or a different bell, bell hanger. My Flewelling bell sits tight to the dog's orange collar with no hanger...no bang issue...

Re: Labs good grouse dogs?

Of course they can. While heavy cover can help hold grouse, the break in any cover is what really holds grouse. Success with any flusher depends most upon time of the season and age of the grouse....followed by the dog's experience on ruffed grouse. Hunt early with young grouse and odds will be in y...

How about this meat pole if you don't think are a bunch of coyotes as big as wolves around the northeast. These were shot in coastal maine by Peter Howland who also happens to be a bear/bird guide...but loves to shoot yotes. He stacks them up like that pretty frequently. Coyotes are a growing probl...

Re: dog bottle

All squirt bottles are not all created equal...some will allow the dog to lick/push the nozzle shut very easily, others with a flip top will find that top breaking very easily...try several water brands and see what works best for your dog's manner of drinking. Some bottles may be too large in diame...

Setter, in general.
English, by preference.
Field, right now.
Needlepoint but, in actuality, I buy a dog's eyes.

Why Field English Setters?....Because they make me grin and grimace, both...the easiest.

Re: English setter

While I prefer FT coverdog-type setters, I expect you will be far happier with less amperage as a first setter. The Coverdog BB is also not the place place to look, IMO. Having attended a picnic at George Tracy's place with a passel of FTers, I know that FTers will always have a handfull of dogs "pe...

Re: What's up with this pigeon???

Not sure of this but... as I recall, pigeons have air sacs in the neck and shoulder area. If the loft is over-crowded there can be issues with infection, or whatever, in these air sacs. Since they deal with the air a pigeon breaths then any issue with them may lead to poor vitality...or worse. I see...

I like Euk, I like Pro-Plan during hunting season...I like Purina One other times. Basically, because my dogs do well on them. I'm sure other foods would work also....but I do not like to find bugs/weevils/etc. in dry dog food...silly jokes about protein additives ignored. I feed what works and what...

Has the dog had a vet check? I limit the higher protein food after season and as I recall puppy food has higher protien so ...a heads-up. Personally, I add a good canned dog food to Pro-Plan or Euk when a dog is working hard...I prefer Blue Buffalo. Nutri-Cal and such might help but are expensive. S...

There are different causes, different fixes and different cures for that problem. It can be from a person holding their head off the stock at the last moment either thru looking for a better view of the bird, loss of contact in poor follow-thru or simply through fear of recoil....often unrealized. I see no reason to villify the poster who first shouted..."Hey, look!..dogs in trouble!" The q...

Re: O/U for a lanky dude...

You can buy a slip-on pad of various types to lengthen the stock while in a store. But a gun can feel fine in a store and less so when shot. LOP is the least important fit factor, to me. Most folks can adjust. Also, utilizing a LOP of greater than standard length often requires a perfect and repeata...

Re: best breeds for ruffed grouse and woodcock

Experience is more important in the development of a grouse dog than breed. All pointing dogs will work after a fashion given opportunity and hunting in the gene pool. Buy what you like to look at, what makes you grin and what fits your household and family. Setters are classic but brits, pointers a...

I use a Tacoma with a topper and two vari-kennels strapped down to a platform.
