Re: New Danners
I have a pair of Pronghorns and a pair of Super Rainforests. The Pronghorns are just OK, the Rainforests are ridiculously wonderful boots, but at $375 a pop, they should be. The Pronghorns are not US made though, and the Rainforests are. My first pair of Rainforests lasted 14 years through pretty he...

Re: Watching Westminster?
How does that long pretty hair help a dog in the field? It sounds like it is only a hindrance. If that's the case, why is it something the show people look highly upon? Why would someone go out of their way to develop something that takes away from the dog in the field? Aren't these field dogs? Shou...

I agree with that, but why don't they use field ability as the basis for show conformation, since these are field dogs? Like you said about the increasing longer coats of brittanys in the show ring, how does that help them in the field? It doesnt, and IMO should be a penalty rather than something th...

Whenever you take a breed of dog that was bred for the field as its main objective, and try to make prancing it around a ring in a glamour contest, equal to the field objective, then problems will arise. This is not necessarily true. Many very good GSPs in the show ring also do very well in the fie...

Dandy pup! What's her breeding? Im done working now, so I can respond a little more specific. This was a breeding that was planned for a couple of years, but timing never worked out until last summer. Recent trial results made the breeding icing on the cake though. My puppy is out of last years NFC...

I've been having fun with my 6 month old brit. So far, she seems like she has what it takes to be a bird dog. She's getting more and more confident in the field and extending her range every time I get her out. I'll continue to run her and let her have fun for the next couple months, then it's off t...

I agree that 1hr of hunting is totally different than 1 hr of competition off horseback. Unless you've seen the difference, you don't know what it is. We only enter my dog in 1hr trials, but she is a totally different dog in competition then she is hunting. She's done both enough that she's figured ...

And if I were your trainer I would tell you the same thing, it is just easier on the trainer. Easier is rarely better. Again, I want them anticipating the retrieve, up on their toes. I never let any dog retrieve ever bird, I always hunt them in at least pairs, so they take turns, and sometimes I le...

That's fine. Ive spoken with two top Brit Pros and they both said basically the exact same thing. Another all breed Pro said to let them only retrieve a few so the dog didn't anticipate the retrieve. I'm sorry and this is just my humble opinion, but a hunting dog not retrieving because it might screw up its style on the point and flush is about as lame a statement as a show judge telling me he passed on my GSP because he was "too muscular". What a stupid pitty. Not letting a gun dog retrieve because it may lose style after the flush. If your "kicking" up birds, my guess is your hunting poorly released pen birds. Get ready for a lab or Cocker, springer, etc to catch those same birds before you ever get to shoot. If your destroying birds at 10-25 yards out, there's any easy fix. Don't shoot till the birds are 20-30 yards out. Or o...
