Do the dogs interact when not hunting? If they don't know each other, they may have decided the other is the enemy, stealing his prey. Just a thought.

They own the dog, they get to set the rules. Some won't adopt out a hunting dog to hunters. Some claim that they can make unannounced visits and reclaim the dog if your care doesn't meet their requirements. Then, they try to tell you buying a dog is wrong, as it encourages breeding. I saw one postin...

A high drive excited dog will run right through it, then will be fenced out. Also, roving dogs can walk right in. I watched an ESS spend an afternoon sneaking up on her fence, trying to outwit it. She would get close, get zapped, do a backflip, and move a little farther down the line.

You can start teaching manners any time. Recall can start at every meal. Make your recall command, then put the food dish down. A trained dog knows what you want and don't want. Makes for confidence. The time spent training helps bond.

HSUS is about their definition of animal welfare and are not to be confused with your local human shelter. There philosophy is very close to PETA, which means to get lots of money and publicity, spend little on animal welfare, lots on administration.
