I have also read this. I have never tried it, so I don't know if it will work. It sounds like it would work. After the dog does it well with the hotdog transition over to freshly killed birds and the retrieve becomes the reward? Very interested if anyone has done this.

To keep from losing your gun, just take some nylon cord or a long bootlace and tie it together through the trigger gaurd or some guns have a eyelet at the base of the handle. You can find blank guns from $20 to $200. I use one that shoots 209 primers, They seem to be the cheapest to buy and are loud. I got mine from Lion Country for about $70 at the time. I use the tritronics also, but they are old and don't have the remote on/off. Other than that I like them. They have saved me from losing a dog on point in heavy Crp grass more than once. They have also allowed me to bag a few more birds because of that also. :D

Definitly, before you go through force fetch, There is allot things you can do to get him to retrieve if he does not. I see quite often a dog that won't retrieve a bumper or ball, but goes crazy on retrieving birds.

That's neat, sounds like they hold tighter than quail. I think I will have to try it. Looks like they are maybe the perfect pointing dog bird :) Not like them runnin pheasants! :roll:

Thanks Birdogdoc, Yes I do have a dose rate that my vet has worked out for me. 51-100# dogs get 0.5ml, 26-50# dogs get 0.3 ml,and 1-25# dogs get 0.1 ml. Does this sound about right? :)

When does your season start? our preserve season runs Sept. 1 to March 31, and our wild Pheasant and quail season is from around Nov.1 till Jan. 31. Grouse and prairie chicken starts mid Sept. and ends Dec 31.

That is good, get her on those birds and fired up and you will be doing great. Always wanted to do the muzzleloader shot gun. Think it would be the ultimate challege and great knowing that your dog pointed the bird. :D

Ne Vizsla, Right on!! Either the dog does it or it does not. alot less grey area. :) As far as a judge failing a dog because it was breaking on the blank, thats just plain wrong. SH dogs can move as soon as a shot is fired, it does not matter if it is a blank or a shotgun. This is pretty cut and dry...

Jcbuch, I agree reasonable gun range. Remember if you are runing a SH dog get that blank fired asap, so the dog can move, unless you know he will stand for you until you get there.

3 joes, I think thats what I planted when we built our house and it seems to hold up well. It does not take very much water either. I think I might have had some red fescu mixed in there also.

I think fescu is the toughest. I fenced in a 200 ft by 75ft area with the house at the corner.
