I have also read this. I have never tried it, so I don't know if it will work. It sounds like it would work. After the dog does it well with the hotdog transition over to freshly killed birds and the retrieve becomes the reward? Very interested if anyone has done this.

I have heard of this once before. How did you start the training? I would like to work with my dogs on this. My Dad has a dog that seems to have always had a better nose for fur than feathers, wonder if he would be a good shed finder? He is always comming up with coons, opossems, and cats. I love it w...

To keep from losing your gun, just take some nylon cord or a long bootlace and tie it together through the trigger gaurd or some guns have a eyelet at the base of the handle. Then run the loop through your belt loop or somthing on your vest and then place the gun through the loop and pull it tight. ...

You can find blank guns from $20 to $200. I use one that shoots 209 primers, They seem to be the cheapest to buy and are loud. I got mine from Lion Country for about $70 at the time. I also have a cheapo that shoots 22 crimps, I use it for pups at first and I think I only paid $20 for it. 22 crimps ...

Wow, that stinks. I can't beleive that some people are that way. It would be nice if you could report that type of conduct to the SD game and parks. People like that should be looked into by the state ,It only reflects bad things about trips taken in SD and I wouldn't think that a state that depends...

After he brings it don't take it from him right away. Praise and pet him, let him know he is the best dog in the world while he holds it for 5 or 10 seconds, then give him the out or give command. This way he does not see it as if you are taking the object from him right away. He sees it as a positi...

I definitly see and know both sides of the fence on this one, but ultimatly there is no better feeling than having a 100% broke dog. wether it be wild bird hunting or out training, or shooting some birds on a preserve having a dog stand and wait to be released for a fetch or to continue on hunting j...

I use a 2x4 frame work out of treated lumber. Then I use self tapping sheet metal screws and put on galvanised tin roofing/sheeting. I like the wood frame (which is wired to the kennel panel tubing) because I was able to run conduit and put elct. outlets above every 6x12 run. Works great for water b...

GSP Guys, what is The stoy on the dogs?
Just wanting to get some opinions on black dogs. I currently do not have or had any but, it seems that is all I see anymore. I knew that for a long time the AKC would allow the black dogs to run in feild events, but not compete in the show ring, is this still true? If the AKC is registering black an...

Ne Vizsla, Right on!! Either the dog does it or it does not. alot less grey area. :) As far as a judge failing a dog because it was breaking on the blank, thats just plain wrong. SH dogs can move as soon as a shot is fired, it does not matter if it is a blank or a shotgun. This is pretty cut and dry...

Cheif_dog, I agree. All I was saying was a senior dog is alowwed to break on the shot. Simply saying fire the blank and let the dog move on. If the dog is broke more to a master level, treat the situation as if there could be more birds there and if not fire the blank to show the dog is steady. if y...

I use the ivormec for Heartworm preventer. It is just so much more cost effective. My vet has worked out a dos rate for me based off of the dogs weight. A MH dog is to show that it is broke on all birds it encounters. Broke means steady to wing and shot. That is why the handler is to blank all finds on the back course and a blank is to be fired in the bird feild if the gunners have no shot. The same goes on stop to flush birds. The dog stops and sta...

Rob, I agree the call back deal stunk. Remember, it's harder to pass a good dog, the more finds the greater the chance for a mistake. the odds of no shot in the bird feild plus the birds flying towards the gallery in call backs just ain't spose to happen all in the same day. it wasn't pretty but at ...

Quail or chucker, do they smell differant to a dog?
What is everyones opinion on this? do you think that a pen raised chucker smells like a pen raised quail. Can a dog tell the differance? I ran 2 young dogs in JH test last weekend and they had never seen a pen raised quail. I had only used pigeons and chucks for training and they didn't have any pro...
