YOUR Opinion...Derby or Not?
If he is broke, he is broke and that's the standard that has to be maintained at the trial. Regardless if running in derby or broke dog stakes, I would pick him up for the tiniest infraction, regardless if the judges ordered him up. I'd also pick him up of they weren't handling correctly either. Pro...

Best thing you can do is to go early (assuming you arent first brace of the trial) and watch. You will learn more walking a few braces than anyone can tell you on the WWW. Plus, you will want to know the course before turning your dog loose. Only thing you need are you, your dog, starter pistol and ...

There is no need to run the dog in any tests. You need to get the dog loving birds and introduce the gun properly. If not, good pointers can be had for around $400.

Let the dog learn to handle loose birds. When he stops knocking them and handles them correctly, shoot him some birds. Don't worry about him standing through the flush until you break him.

Possibly an orange or lemon & white shorthair.
In all honesty, it would be more beneficial for other breeds to be more worried about closed breed endurance stakes before venturing outside of their comfort level.

Shorthairs are versatile, it's rabbit season right and rabbit tastes good right? Choot em! If you wanted a bird dog, should have got a pointer or setter.
Just messing with you, I've just ignored it and only nick them if they won't move on. Keep shooting em birds and they'll forget about rabbits.
