The pointers are handled from horsevack and the Spaniels come off the dog wagon, so not necessarily hunted together, but a good example of what can be accomplished.

If you're all about running as many dogs in as many stakes in a weekend, probably isn't for you and your club. I can't speak for perfect finish, however the best flying birds you can buy, the kind that fly the next county are always best for dog training. I'd rather pay for more birds than have crappy flying birds. More natural, less temptation & distraction for dogs.

I would take the guided approach too with only one dog and making such a long trip. Since you live in TX, I think the biggest factor to consider in a pointing breed is heat tolerance. I would take a serious look at pointers if you want a dog that is born with a ton of natural talent and have the highest heat tolerance. If you were hunting pheasants and ducks in ND, GWP would be a g...

The pup is 9 weeks, it doesn't need to know anything about recall, whoa, or any such thing. More than likely it wont leave a 10' circle. Really I though folks would get points docked if the dog moves it feet as the bird flys away even to twist to see where it drops. I think opinions vary with judges on this matter. For house stuff like kennel, sit or would you rather be a Cleveland browns fan or a dead dog. For field work, no, I use praise. I've watched Maurice Lindley softly stoke a dog and I've tried to imitate it. Doesn't get the dog stupid happy, but lets him know he did it right.

I'd be more focused on getting him out for walks in the woods and fields and bird intro in a few weeks. Put the fire in him. House manners are a must, but other than that, I dont do much with mine that young. Just started working my pointer on recall at around 5 months.

Test young. Give the pups plenty of exposure leading up to it and see what momma and daddy gave them. Obviously the scores will be lower than they would be if you tested them, but a 12-13 month old dog will have a lot of training in them.

In a nutshell: 4) Work them into the scent cone and Whoa them on first scent For dogs that like to bolt and don't want to stand, you can also take it a step farther and blast a pistol then immediately Whoa the dog. This makes it so "Whoa" is a Whoa command, a bird in the air is a Whoa command and a...

I would say 95% of dogs will settle into a comfortable hunting range given adequate time to mature and enough bird exposure. I'd find some big expanses of land with no hazards and just try to keep quiet. You and your dog will be working as a team in no time, regardless if its 20 or 200 yards.

I can't speak to the cost, but you would need to get your existing floor diamond ground and some type of new flooring applied. I would stick with plain concrete for the budget approach. Could also look at some type of MMA (methyl methacralate) or real epoxy flooring.
