Re: 2nd Hunting Dog to run with GSP
Right now you're dog is retrieving for itself and not for you. The force fetching will change that and your dog will be even better than before. I would wait until you see how this fall goes before considering another dog. If this fall goes well and retrieving isn't an issue, find another good pup a...

Re: more than one hunting dogs in the house?
Have a 3yr old lab and 7month old GSP both in the house. They are created when we are not home but both know their spot when they are out. The pup can get a little wound up but the lab ends it when he is done with it. Expect spills, paw prints and hair, lots and lots of hair.

Since you said the dog is not trained yet go with the Pro 550. Great training tool, multi dog capable, beeper accessory.

Thanks for all the input. We were out at a training day and she grew braver through out the day. Had a couple buddies just walk her around on leash after we finished bird work. Would leave skidish and come back 5 min later like they were buddies.

Honestly even if she doesn't like social situations she will be the best dog I've had. Once she's in the field nothing phases her, she knows her job and does it. But I will stop the babying, hopefully she comes out of it. Should I keep putting her in social situations?

My 7 month old GSP has been very skidish around new people lately. She has been well socialized, take her to office and obedience classes this winter. Now we are getting in to club trading sessions. She will hide behind me when she is approached and it takes some coaxing to get her to socialize now....

I have a GSP and a lab, I was a lab only guy for years. I if you upland hunt food plots and smaller parcels of ground a lab will fit perfectly. However if you hunt large CRP type ground go GSP. Re: force fetch prior to bird exposure?
Anything that puts pressure on a dog has the potential to affect search or drive. Some dogs fear that pressure and will not venture far from you to prevent the pressure being applied. I currently have a lab that this applies to, would only go out about 10 yards and then come back. It took a week of...

All the dogs I've trained have always been on birds before ff. During ff I use some frozen birds occasionally, but other than that its minimal birds during early ff. Maybe one a week until I think they have firm grasp on ff, then back to daily.

Swamp is right when the dog is on the table or training spot there are no freebies. Keep ahold of the ear at all times until you move to the ecollar. Doesn't mean you have to pinch hard all the time, but I the dog knows refusal isn't an option.

Get a South Dakota hunting atlas. This will show all of the public hunting ground in the state. Chamberlain gets hit hard by non-residents, so late season hunting can be tough. If you can, hit the areas about 30 min. South of Chamberlain. Birds are up, but still have to work for a limit.

Yes, I do follow my own advice. I generally call the GFP if I have a regulation question. But I typically do it before the season even starts. Re: Non Toxic ammunition, Does your state require it for upland
The way the GFP described it to me was road hunting and private land (including School Lands) are the only places not required to use non-toxic shot. Walk-in areas are a gray area, if they are state or federaly owned then non-toxic is required. However if it is private land that the state leases it ...

For any form of bird hunting there is no requirement for a certification. Big game such as deer and turkey require an huter education course. If you only archery hunt then you can get by with an Archery safety course.
