Re: Steady then not
I think the key is to allow the dog to work without relying on overhandling and nagging. There's nothing wrong, and something impressive, about a dog that obeys instantly and completely. But then, what's good about a dog that isn't allowed to work on its own, who relies on handler commands for ever...

Novices following along should not be mislead into thinking this is an either or proposition. With proper balance it is very possible to have a dog with great search, run and effectiveness while also having a dog which is swiftly and consistently responsive in heeding its Handler's commands. Try stopping a dog that chase's on the flush or shot with the whoa command. A command you can't enforce when needed is un-teaching the command. ..Maybe ' whoa or Bananas , word command is interpreted as slow up there , as in a wagon with a horse , rather than Stop ? , then again, maybe some see it ...

I suppose if you look at it as a sequential process ,which most of you guys over there call a program when in training ? To me it's a simple case of the dog not coming when called. There is NO excuse for this. It doesn't matter where the dog is and what it's doing, when you command HERE, the dog should immediately cease and desist it's action returning to your side. In context and situation of course !! I usually fin...

Raw whole Carrot !
It may not keep the dog chewing for a long time definitely good for their teeth ,cheap ,affordable and readily available throughout the year ...but then working and daily hard exercise will have it occupied enough to get some rest in between chewing .

There's quite a bit of difference between a good trial dog and a great bird dog. Great bird dog will probably get you picked up every time! Moving out of cover to mark a bird is allowed in the guidelines but not by judge's. Spending a lot of time searching for a bird the dog didn't mark is fine, re...
