Ruth we all are just doing our best! I give you great credit for taking the "blame" but I am not sure you are at fault. Sometimes things happen we have no control over.... just like kids raise them all the same one becomes a Dr. and the other a bum. Sometimes things are out of our control.

The two we often get is our oldest will catch ground squirrels, she loves the chase, but they quickly die and she runs around the yard throwing them in the air trying to get them to continue the game. Only experience is with Vizslas. The are incredibly affectionate---sometimes to much so! I love the breed but they can be soft talk to your breeder and make sure the dog you get matches your training style. They do best as an in door dog as they love to be around people.

Iowa is not #2 anymore! I live in Iowa EC and birds are hard to find. In fact, I saw a contest to hit the top 5 pheasant states and Iowa wasn't even listed. Sad really.... we are 49th in state land only ahead of Rhode Island. Most of my hunting is preserve hunts.

Let this pup get out and learn. I would also say to make sure when he does start moving away from you build his confidence by following him. That way when you looks back he sees you there and following.
