there is a product for rubber coating tools you can get at a supply house that you could dip the first few inches of chain in. or maybe somehow slip over and tie a piece of clear plastic hose over the first few inches of the chain. I would forget the electric blanket also, you won't need the vest either. Feed the dogs at night so they have a full belly and do what I suggested with the crate and they will be warm. Its a big difference in temp from here to ND and my shorthairs never ever seem to notice. I think they like it cold...
