Re: Am I being too hard? Not hard enough?
By 4 mos old my puppies understand that "no" means "NO". They don't learn that with constant nagging. If you are repeating the command you are nagging. That being said - puppies are going to run around with things, chew on things and be a terror at times. What they need is some things that they are ...

Yeah, I don't own a prong collar. I have a pinch but usually just use the choke. The tool is not so important as the technique which is the constant. I have also used the end of the leash twirling to help the dog with a cue to the forward boundary.

"Ready" would be a few days after you get him home. If you have lots of wild birds take him out for little walks where the birds are. The more birds the better doesn't mean only birds gunned over the dog.

I got started with hunting before I was even aware of it - one of my memories as a child was watching my dad and his friends haul an antelope through the trap door of the kitchen to the cellar to hang. It is a vivid picture in my mind and later in life I learned we moved from that house when I was j...

There are lots of hunting dogs who are asked to track down a crippled bird and pick them up without establishing point again, who still have zero problems pointing, many from NAVHDA. I prefer to train for it after a bird has been pointed, it has been watched go to wing and shots fired. Garrison The...

Threaded chain links work great on mine - never really considered doing it any other way. If you are worried about them opening up you could put a little purple threadlocker on when you tighten them. I just use two pair of pliers to tighten and have never had one work loose.

There is nothing wrong with the condition of your dog. Her coat looks good and she isn't gant. Ribs showing is far, far better than smooth sided.
