I used to use the barrel. But my last dog I use the method in the book "Training with Mo", which you basically do on a CC.
Just teach the dog to stop and stand. Easy and effective, at least with Indy.

I have had all the setters other than the Red and White.
Basically you can get what ever you want, it just takes some investigation.
I have two Llewellins right now and they are outstanding in the house and in the field.
Look at the Gordons as well, there are a lot of good Gordons now.

Hunting a pointing dog in Cattails is really not an ideal situation. You really should be going in there and flushing the bird, rather than a pointing dog flushing it. I don't hunt my dogs in that type of cover, but I have lots of other areas to hunt. But I have had times where I have had a dog on p...

If you don't have an ecollar or a tracking collar, I would go with the Alpha.
I have TT pro 200, Astros, and it was a good combination. Just bought The Alpha and love it.
Nice only having to mess with one collar, and you have the safety of the tracking and training collars at the same time.

Think some of us are talking about different things.
I like seeing my dog swing out and work back toward me. This happens after he was on point, and I relocate him if the bird ran.
I don't like to see a dog on point moving around when I am going in to flush.

I don't think it can be trained. I believe there are some dogs that have enough experience with certain types of birds and are wise enough to figure it out. If the dog understands that if he moves he will cause the bird to fly, standing on point for a considerable time is not a big deal for the dog. Early in the season it seem to work well, to bring the young dumb ones in. Later in the season on heavily hunted birds, I think it actually hurts you.
I have used one for 3 or 4 seasons I would guess. Think you will like the way it works early.
