Upland boots, struggling
Last year, around Octberish, I bought a new pair of Mendle Denalis from Cabelas. I had gone through my Danners, Rocky's etc. All seemed to leak very badly. I was directed to the Denalis by a friend. I worked hard to break these boots in. Including wearing them all summer during training. Now they ar...

Train the dog not the breed.
A DD is a dog just like the rest. He is a V-dog and needs to be exposed to waterfowl, upland and fur if you would like. But dont get caught up in thinking you have to train it any differently then any other V-dog breed. Its a dog.

My concern is that I will eventually have to train her to retrieve. No need to be concerned. FF doesnt HAVE to be harsh. Watch the Evan Gram videos. There is no point in having a dog that is going to mutalate the birds you shoot. You may as well just deal with the issue now and not let it get worse.

Hey, I think we have answered the op's question as best we could, but with his indulgence I would like to know more about the fox/cat killing test. How would trap enough foxes to run such a test? Munster So you're calling me a liar but won't elaborate on the testing requirements. I agree 100% on the bad breeding but they're bred to pass the requirement set in place. A shorthair treeing a squirrel is a long ways away from a DL killing a fox on command for a judge to see. With testing require...

The German testing requires a kill also for their sharpness requirements. I've lost an English pointer to a very sharp DL. I think the dog looks good too.
But the set up is to stale, boring and slow. I dont think you would work a wild bird so slow...... Get there, work the bird, keep the dog guessing, honest and on his toes. SOmetimes if he hits the scent, cut the bird loose right away. make it fun and make him think.

But you also need someone close that can help guide you along.
