The size card that I use is 3x6 inches. The length of the string is determined by the abount of cover. Thick cover requires a shorter string, about 6 inches between bird and card. For sparse cover I use a string of 12 inches. If the birds are getting into the trees, you may want to pull a few flight...

Creating a Training Area

My wife's Grandpa has 200 arces of land that is currently be leased out for cattle grazing. The lease is up next year. At that time, he has stated that I can purchase the land. When I do, I want to turn the land into a training ground for my dogs. Does anyone have a good idea of what I should do to ...

You may want to try Dave Walker's dvds as he used pigeons to train dogs. He starts be letting them chase and catch them and then works with the check cord on the "whoa" command and on "stand up stand still" of bird dog training.
I have used his method and it has worked well.

I use pigeons and give the pup the head when it brings the bird directly to me. Just a few times work well. I also clap my hands to get its attention if it wavers. I wouldn't worry, the pup will focus soon enough.

If the love and praise method doesn't work, you can gently squeeze his lower lip while saying give. I had to use this method on my male. It took only a few times and he does really well now. But try the praise method first.

It also helps if you know any landowners who will let you hunt their land. If you contact the local farm co-ops, they might know of farmers who allow hunting on their lands. They generally want to keep the larger groups out of their fields.

I'm not sure that it will do any good in Utah, however. Our Neighbor had their lab chipped and the pound didn't even bother to check until they called. Seems that it isn't a priorty for them.

I feed once a day at 4pm.
Why? Have you ever seen a dog at trial after it has been fed? Put it this way. You eat a full meal and start running for 30 to 60 minutes.
I will say that if it is really cold and the dogs are not going anywhere that day, I will give them a bit extra food in the morning.

I also read the original post. The dog does not have this problem outside of the house. This leads me to believe that it is a dominance issue. Dominance can be dealt. The dog is acting as if it is the alpha dog. I have been able to train dogs away from this type of behavior and believe that the dog'...

That is what I love. Pop-psychology. Dog take their cues from their owners. Many tend to allow the dog to become dominant, alpha dog, in the house. This is a problem behavior not a shot em first situation. If your first tendency is to put the dog down when it shows any sign of bad behavior, get a cat.

Sorry, I am going to disagree. Dogs are territorial by nature. However, they tend to take their cues from you. The dog may have gotten the impression that this was acceptable from you as a puppy. Before getting rid of him, you may want to work the agression out of him. Try using a training collar wi...

This was a totally enjoyable read.
Dogs eat poop, sniff butts, and drink from the potty. As long as you are not french kissing them, don't worry.
You'll be fine and so will they.

If you are really worried, ask your vet to check them out.

The funniest point that my Ron has had happened last fall. We were out hunting quail and found a Goose instead. Kicking out a bird that will bite back really does something for the old ticker. I shot the honker and laughed as Ron brought it back.
