Re: 2nd Hunting Dog to run with GSP

Right now you're dog is retrieving for itself and not for you. The force fetching will change that and your dog will be even better than before. I would wait until you see how this fall goes before considering another dog. If this fall goes well and retrieving isn't an issue, find another good pup a...

Re: more than one hunting dogs in the house?

Have a 3yr old lab and 7month old GSP both in the house. They are created when we are not home but both know their spot when they are out. The pup can get a little wound up but the lab ends it when he is done with it. Expect spills, paw prints and hair, lots and lots of hair.

My 7 month old GSP has been very skidish around new people lately. She has been well socialized, take her to office and obedience classes this winter. Now we are getting in to club trading sessions. Anything that puts pressure on a dog has the potential to affect search or drive. Some dogs fear that pressure and will not venture far from you to prevent the pressure being applied. Swamp is right when the dog is on the table or training spot there are no freebies. Keep ahold of the ear at all times until you move to the ecollar. Doesn't mean you have to pinch hard all the time, but I the dog knows refusal isn't an option.

Get a South Dakota hunting atlas. This will show all of the public hunting ground in the state. Chamberlain gets hit hard by non-residents, so late season hunting can be tough. If you can, hit the areas about 30 min. South of Chamberlain. Birds are up, but still have to work for a limit.

The way the GFP described it to me was road hunting and private land (including School Lands) are the only places not required to use non-toxic shot. Walk-in areas are a gray area, if they are state or federaly owned then non-toxic is required. However if it is private land that the state leases it ...
