Re: First NSTRA placement

How did you do? I've got my last trial of the fall next weekend, I'm hoping for one more placement. This will be the last trial before my first child is born, so I'm sure I'll be limited to how many trials I'll be making it to in the spring.

Re: NSTRA QUESTION! or Two!

NSTRA awards championships, and multiple championships can be awarded to a dog. To become a champion the dog needs 18 points, 9 of which need to be from first place wins. Full rules here http://nstra.org/files/RuleBook.pdf . In a full (24 - 32 dog) trial, 3 placements are given out 3pts for 1st, 2p...

South Dakota season opener

Went up to north central South Dakota last weekend for the opener with 7 other guys. We shot our limit in four hours on the first day. Days 2 and 3 were tough because of high winds. Day 4 we were down to 5 hunters and killed 13 birds. We brought home a total of 64 birds for the freezer. We saw 4-5x ...

Going to opening day in SD October, hunting the 15th - 18th. Opening day in Kansas November 12th - 14th. Not sure if I'm going to make it out to wild bird hunt in MO until late in the season.

We were at Nelson Ridge near Ravenwood, MO which is about 30 minutes east of Maryville. They got plenty of rain up there this summer. Jason Nelson the owner is a good guy and we had a great hunt to kick off the season.

Drove around the farm in Shelby county this weekend and saw few dove, ones and twos on the power lines. Saw a few small groups on the gravel roads in the early morning. Didn't shoot at any. I did also see 8 turkeys, 2 coyotes, and bumped two quail out of the ditch so it turned out to be a good morni...

It may depend on what part of the state you're in as to how many birds you'll get into. I'd say a bad day in SD is just as good as a normal day in Kansas though. There are lots of people talking about the forecasts, which I'm not going to argue since I have no "data" of my own. However, I do know th...

Normally you will register the dog and provide the name. The breeder should provide you with the paperwork with the information you need to register you dog, I did mine online at akc.org.

Welcome to GDF Holly. NSTRA sure is a fun venue that I enjoy greatly. It will really push you to continue training your dog to higher and higher standards. I would for sure say you should attend trials and watch and learn before entering one yourself.

We foster for the American Brittany Rescue. They have a rule that new fosters cannot adopt their first foster dog. That helps you not get attached. We have had 5-6 come through in the past couple of years.

I chose a female for my first birddog, mostly because I liked the way she was bold and curious. I had pick of the litter so I chose her over 7 other pups. So far, I think I made the right choice. She does have a strong desire to hunt and to please me. The only downside is the heat cycles if you don'...

Re: What shotgun do you use in trials and training?

In training and trialing I use a CZ woodcock 20ga O/U. The biggest reason is that it's lightweight, and I can carry it broken open over the shoulder. I cover a lot of ground during the trial and I don't want to get tired out lugging a bigger gun. It's also shorter which makes it fast on target, givi...

In my opinion I would not do anything to restrict her while she is a puppy. Let her be a puppy and be excited to be out in the field. Also, just because the father had a wide range does not mean she will do the same. I would learn her style first before trying to mold her into what you want her to d...
