Funny how folks are critical of methods that have been used by others that worked very well...! I have trained many retrievers, some gun shy, most not! The gun club method, done slowly has worked 100% of the time. I notice that those who are 'critical' provide no experience supporting their "Theory"...

In a state park near to me we have a Trap and Skeet Club. Slightly behind the club parking lot is a very large open grassy area. We have 3 field bred, Golden Retrievers. We feed them all in our laundry room, with water and food bowls on the floor. I agree with your assumption that anything else is crazy!

I cannot speak to grouse hunting...as I do not do that! But my retrievers hunt pheasant and quail regularly! They are trained to work within 40 - 45 yards of us. They are also whistle trained to sit on whistle command! They all are field bred and are very strong at finding and following a scent cone...

I now have 3 field bred Golden Retrievers....this is a limited picture of a used 4 hole trailer I bought a few years ago. It has taken the work out of going with our dogs....

She is now a Senior Hunter SH and has her Working Dog Excellent WCX title.....a good hunter she is...!

I use the horse stall rubber pads you can get at any Farm Home type store. They come in 4' X 4' size and only cost a few bucks. They are impossible for a dog to chew or destroy. I would have continued running hunt tests after my Golden Retriever earned her Senior Hunter title and WCX. She would have earned her Master Hunter with just a little more training on my part. Listening to the tape, anyone who really understands guns knows that guy was using automatic weapons. Which are generally illegal, unless you have some very special federal permits or if you know how to convert a semi-automatic weapons to automatic .... I agree this is not a time to deal with this.....

I am a Retriever guy, but we do hunt upland game as well as waterfowl. I have three Golden's all trained as gun dogs. My youngest is 4 now and she is an AKC SH! She is a joy to work with and we are excited for this years season to begin..... :mrgreen:

Paul... I have had gun dog retrievers for over 25 years. I work with pro trainers and do a lot of my own training. AS noted above training these dogs is a marathon. I am not sure how old your pup is, but regardless dove hunting is the worst possible bird you can use for hunting. They do not have a strong scent as most birds do. Sounds like a great start for your gun dog! Especially, good on doves, because they leave limited scent and their light feathers come off when dogs retrieve them. Therefore, many good retrievers really dislike picking up doves.....

Go to a local farm coop or similar place. Dairy farmers and Ranchers have stuff they put in the barns that help keep down the flys and insects. I beleive you can put it up where the dogs cannot get into it....
