Well you need a good dog first :) out of good lines. I'm no pro but I belive training can make a winner but like Delmar said, find the line you like and go get a pup. He turned left over pups into national champs thru training. Go old school, I think the old methods made better dogs. Took more yard ...

Re: Breeding Shooting Dogs
Most dogs are dependant on their owners, as such they refuse to range way out there. Train them to be independent and they will range further, also in a field full of birds, well range isn't on their minds at all. Training is 90% of the dogs run in FT world. And room to run out, see here most guys w...

I think everyone should read Delmars book, lots of good stuff in there. Don't over think it, just pick the line you want and go for it.
I like Odysey kennels stuff for a shorthair. DC lines do it all and look great doing it.

In this day and age, the PC has corrupted many a good dog and owner. You all way over think everything, let it go. Use the Delmar Smith method. I "Free feed" my dogs, Delmar says keep the feed pail full and dog will eat only what he needs, feed him a little bit twice a day that pup will eat everything put down in front of him. I find this to be a true statement. Keep the food bucket full and pup will be better off for it.

Ok, here is my take. Cost of trialing keeps a lot of folks out of the game. Hunting around here never entails the use of a horse, most fields are small and unloading a horse will surely run off them wild birds.
