Re: Am I being too hard? Not hard enough?
I have personally always believed in curing a problem and not going around it. That is what separated a professional from an amateur. I, personally, think you did the correct thing. The word NO! should strike terror into the heart of every dog.

I like to post this at the start of each hunting season. It shows some of the dangers we never consider to ourselves and our dogs. This happened several years ago. There are many good lessons hidden in the story if you seek them. WHAT EVER IT TAKES It was a special day known only to October. Blue sk...

Re: Skeet/Trap + Training a bird dog :)
Introducing a dog to gun fire at a gun range is a fantastic method for creating a gun shy dog. Just because it's convenient doesn't mean it's a good idea. I'm sure lots of people will chime in with " I did it with my dog and he's great" but that is not a risk I would take on a dog you want to hunt ...

I belong to a small skeet-trap club and there are quite a few of us take their dog's to the club to sharpen them up. Yours is still fairly young and what he is exhibiting is a simple lack of obedience. SIT means SIT and the dog should do it until commanded to do any other command or is released from...

Breeders and trainers have spent countless years conscientiously developing great breeds of dog's geared to do a specific job. I think it's sad that people jump on these curs, pay big bucks for them, and laud how great they are. Generally when you cross breed two dog's, the very traits those dog's p...

I was very, very, successful in picking winning field trial pups for clients. The older the pup is when you take it, the better your chances are. Most breeders want you to take them at 8 weeks. At 10 weeks you can tell so much more. I used an involved process but for a hunter I like to do two simple...

If you run a dog in CRP, the grass will cut between their toes to ribbons. I use the 1000 denier booties from dogbooties.com for them. If I were hunting sand burrs or checker country, they'd wear Lewis boots. There is a knack to taping them on but when you do it right, they can go in water with them...

Absolutely. It's done in the yard, not in the field. They have to be steady. Sit them at your side and throw a bumper. Send one dog and make the other one wait until the other has returned. Now do it with the other dog. When they are perfect at this, throw a double and send each dog for the correct ...

Here's an old post of mine I did on gun shyness. Breaking to a gun is exactly the same. A dog is very much like a person. We have to also realize that this dog wasn't trained to point. It was trained to stop at first scent. There's a big difference. Any dog can probably be taught to stop at first scent, it's really comparatively easy. Especially with launchers. Like all dog training, simply exposure, consistency, reinf...

For as long as I can remember, people have been training Lab's to stop and point. When I was 6 or 7, Dad used to carry me on his shoulders if I tired while he ran a line of snares in Nova Scotia. We hunted nearly daily, potting the plentiful grouse out of trees. Re: Trials
Some breeds are more suited to varied trial venues than others. You should pick your breed, then pick your trial. For instance, you probably are not going to win a horseback stake with a Griffon or DD. In the NAVHDA venue, it is reasonable rare for an English Pointer to become a VC. There are except...

If you take a tip from the retriever trainers and use a heeling stick, things go quickly. You have given the dog a visual barrier, making it clear to the dog exactly where his place is. I pinch collar and choke chain do the same thing but in my opinion, not in as clear a manor.
